Glare and Reflection Comparison: Metal, Acrylic, and TrueLife Acrylic Prints

Three prints side by side - metal, acrylic, and TrueLife acrylic - Gintchin Fine Art

Glare and Reflection Comparison: Metal, Acrylic, and TrueLife Acrylic Prints

Is glare and reflection a concern for you when buying an acrylic or metal prints? When it comes to showcasing artwork or photography, the choice of material for prints can significantly impact both the aesthetic and practical aspects of the final piece. Among the many options available, acrylic and metal prints stand out for their vivid colors, durability, and high-gloss finish.

However, one common challenge that collectors face with these materials is glare. Reflection glare in acrylic and metal prints can detract from the viewer’s experience, altering the intended appearance of the artwork, depending on the lighting conditions and viewing angle. This not only affects the visual enjoyment but can also obscure the finer details and colors that are crucial to the piece’s impact.

In this article, we explore and compare glare in acrylic and metal prints, providing insights, comparisons, and practical advice to help you make informed decisions for your next project or collection.

Understanding Reflection and Glare in Metal and Acrylic Prints

Reflection glare is a phenomenon many of us have encountered, even if we haven’t always had the terminology at our fingertips. It occurs when light sources bounce off surfaces and interfere with our ability to clearly see the details and colors of an image. In the context of fine art displays, glare in acrylic and metal prints can significantly impact the viewing experience, transforming what should be a moment of connection with art into a struggle to see past reflections.

But why is glare particularly noteworthy when it comes to acrylic and metal prints? These materials are favored for their ability to bring out the vibrancy and depth of images, offering a modern, sleek aesthetic that’s as durable as it is impressive. However, their very appeal—smooth, often glossy surfaces—makes them susceptible to reflecting light, posing a challenge for artists, photographers, and exhibitors aiming to present their work in the best possible light, literally and figuratively.

The Science Behind the Glare

To truly grasp the issue of glare in acrylic and metal prints, it’s helpful to understand the science behind it. Reflection occurs when light waves encounter a surface that can’t absorb them. Instead, these waves are redirected, often back towards the viewer. The intensity and angle of the reflected light waves can cause glare, which obscures detail and color in the print.
The severity of glare is influenced by several factors:

  • Surface Texture: Smooth, glossy surfaces reflect more light directly, whereas matte surfaces scatter light, reducing glare.
  • Viewing Angle: The angle at which the viewer is positioned relative to the print can amplify or diminish the perception of glare.
  • Lighting Conditions: The type, intensity, and direction of light sources play a significant role in the creation of glare. Direct lighting, especially, can cause significant issues.

Why It Matters

For artists and photographers, understanding and managing reflection glare is critical to ensuring that the viewer’s experience of their work is as intended, unaffected by extraneous reflections. For collectors and exhibitors, it’s about preserving the integrity and impact of the displayed piece, making sure that the art, not the glare, captures the viewer’s attention.

In fine art prints, where detail, color accuracy, and aesthetic appeal are paramount, mitigating glare is not just a technical concern but an artistic one.

Glare vs Reflection

The distinction between glare and reflection can be explained as follows:

Glare:
Glare refers to the visual disruption caused by excessively bright light sources or reflections, resulting in a form of visual disturbance. It can be classified into various types, such as discomfort glare, disability glare, and blinding glare. Discomfort glare is a psychological sensation resulting from high brightness that does not necessarily impair vision, while disability glare impairs vision without causing discomfort. Glare can diminish visibility by affecting the intensity, contrast, and scattering of light within the eye or the surrounding environment.

Reflection:
Reflection involves the rebounding of light off a surface, which can lead to decreased light transmission through that surface. When considering anti-reflective coatings, reflections are minimized to improve visual clarity by redirecting light through mediums in order to reduce reflection and increase light transmission. The goal of anti-reflective coatings is to minimize all forms of reflection, both internal and external, in order to maintain a high level of image resolution.

Anti-Glare vs Anti-Reflection

In the realm of fine art prints, particularly when discussing glare in acrylic and metal prints, the terms “anti-glare” and “anti-reflective” are often used. While they might seem interchangeable at first glance, understanding the distinction between these two is crucial for artists, photographers, and collectors alike.

Anti-Glare: Softening the Light

Anti-glare technology is designed to diffuse light as it hits the surface of a print. Instead of light being reflected directly back at the viewer, an anti-glare surface scatters the light, spreading it out more evenly. This diffusion reduces the intensity of reflected light, making it easier to see the details of the artwork from various angles, even in brightly lit environments.
The primary benefit of anti-glare treatments is their ability to minimize the sharpness of reflections, effectively “softening” the glare. This is particularly advantageous in situations where controlling the ambient lighting is challenging. Anti-glare surfaces can help maintain the visibility of the artwork’s colors and details, regardless of the lighting conditions. However, it’s worth noting that while anti-glare does reduce the impact of reflections, it can sometimes introduce a slight haziness to the image, as the light diffusion process affects the clarity to a certain degree.

Anti-Reflective: Enhancing Clarity and Detail

On the other hand, anti-reflective technology goes a step further by not just diffusing light, but also reducing the amount of light that bounces off the print’s surface. This is achieved through special coatings that are applied to the material, which are designed to minimize the reflection of light across a wide range of wavelengths. By reducing reflections, anti-reflective surfaces allow more of the artwork’s details and colors to be visible, enhancing clarity and the vibrancy of the image.
The advantage of anti-reflective treatments lies in their ability to preserve the integrity of the artwork’s appearance under various lighting conditions without compromising on image clarity. This makes anti-reflective materials an excellent choice for galleries, museums, and collectors who wish to display artwork in the best possible light, quite literally.

Comparative Analysis: Glare and Reflection in Acrylic and Metal Prints

In this section we will visually examine glare and reflection in: metal prints, standard acrylic prints, and anti-reflective acrylic prints. This comparative analysis aims to shed light on these materials, helping artists, photographers, and collectors make informed decisions that best suit their display needs and aesthetic preferences.

Through a mix of images and videos, you will have a visual demonstration of how each material handles light, complemented by a concise summary chart at the conclusion. This approach aims to equip you with a comprehensive understanding of the key differences, enabling you to make an informed decision on the ideal printing material for your artwork based on its behavior under various lighting conditions.

NOTE: In all of the pictures and videos the order of print types is always the same from left to right: metal, standard acrylic, anti-reflection TruLife® acrylic print.

The three examples below show each print type when the viewer is at an angle. Even though there is a window directly opposite the wall of the print, glare and reflection are not observed here. This is because of the viewing angle. Notice that the three prints look almost identical.

This example shows the three prints on the exact same wall as the example above. However, in this case the viewing angle is direct and the window reflection is clearly seen. The metal print seems to perform worst of all, followed by a slight improvement in the standard acrylic print, and a significantly better performance by the anti-reflection TruLife® acrylic print.

This example shows a similar configuration as the one above. Now the prints are lying on the floor near a window. Again, the metal and standard acrylic one have similar performance, with the acrylic one being a bit more visible. The anti-reflection TruLife® acrylic print performs best again.

The image below shows metal, standard acrylic, and anti-reflection acrylic (in that order from left to right) when illuminated with non-direct light. In this case the natural light comes from a nearby window and illuminates the prints at an angle, while they are on the floor. Notice that the 3 images look almost identical to each other, when light glare and reflection is not a factor.

The video below demonstrates the ability of metal, standard acrylic, and anti-reflection acrylic (in that order from left to right) to reflect the direct light from a window. In this video clip the glare and reflection are accentuated because of the low camera angle. It is important to note that this type of viewing angle is uncommon in most cases. Nevertheless, it is shown here for additional demonstration.

The video below is the exact same setup as the video above with the one key difference – the camera angle. Unlike the previous example, this clip demonstrates the glare and reflection qualities of the prints at a high angle. Notice how the window frame shadow (the moving vertical line) seems to almost disappear in the last print? This is because its glare/reflection is very low and the print comes to life.

The three videos below demonstrate the glare and reflection characteristics of each print individually.

Making the Right Choice

When considering glare in acrylic and metal prints, the choice between materials boils down to the specific needs of the artwork, the expected display environment, budget, and personal preference regarding image clarity versus reflection management. For those seeking to minimize glare and reflection without significantly compromising on clarity, anti-reflective acrylic offers the best solution. Meanwhile, standard acrylic and metal prints remain excellent choices for settings where lighting can be carefully controlled to accentuate their vibrant and detailed finishes.

Jim’s Story

Jim, a native of Colorado, spent many years away from his home state before deciding to return upon retirement. Settling into a brand-new home he was eager to bring the breathtaking beauty of Colorado’s landscapes indoors. Thus, he started a quest to find the perfect panoramic print that would capture the essence of his beloved state and complement his interior design.

Finding the Right Photo Print

Jim’s fine art search journey began when he moved into a new house with a large white wall, perfect for a panorama horizontal print or three vertical pieces. He was specifically looking for a Colorado landscape, preferably a mountain range, with colors like purples, yellows, and greens. His approach to finding the right artwork involved browsing various websites for Colorado landscapes and mulling over various options.

Why Gintchin Fine Art?

Jim’s decision to purchase from Gintchin Fine Art was influenced by the quality of the artwork. He discovered the online gallery through an internet search, and the vivid, high-quality images of Colorado landscapes caught his eye. The artist’s commitment to capturing the essence of the state’s natural beauty resonated with him. Gintchin Fine Art, renowned for its panoramic landscapes, offered an extensive selection and diverse range of choices. In his words: “There were several prints that met my criteria and were beautiful to look at.

WHY WAS THIS THE PERFECT PRINT

The image Jim ultimately selected was a breathtaking Colorado mountain range (The Sneffels Range). The vivid colors and the sense of tranquility evoked by the scene were what drew Jim to this particular photograph. Also, having grown up in Colorado, the scenery spoke to him.

Choosing the Print Size and Medium

Jim’s approach to selecting the print size and medium was guided by the dimensions of his wall and his desire to make a statement. He opted for a metal print due to its cost-effectiveness and the fact that it would complement the existing print he had in his home. The panoramic format was a natural choice, given the architectural features of his new house.

The Results

“Seeing the print on my wall greatly exceeded my expectations. The clarity and vivid colors were stunning compared to what I viewed off my iPad.”

Jim decided to display the print in an open space that includes his kitchen, dining table, and living room. The print’s placement in the open space ensures that it is visible from several areas, making it a focal point of the home.
The final product exceeded Jim’s expectations. The clarity and vibrancy of the colors were far more impressive in person than they were on his iPad.

How to Buy Fine Art Photography: The Ultimate Guide

When you decide to buy fine art photography it becomes a personal exploration, distinct from the persuasive narratives often encountered online. In an era saturated with articles advocating for nature photography prints as mere aesthetic additions, I present a different perspective. The essence of purchasing fine art nature photography lies in genuine appreciation, transcending external influences. Art should resonate on a personal level, transcending trends and empty walls. This guide navigates the nuanced decisions involved in buying fine art photography, from choosing the right image and space to understanding print mediums, frames, and lighting. This comprehensive guide aims to enrich your journey and enhance the transformative power of high-quality wall art.

Should You Buy Fine Art Photography?

The question of whether or not to buy fine art nature photography is often posed in the age of the internet, where numerous articles advocate for the benefits of incorporating nature photography prints into one’s living or working spaces. While these articles may serve as marketing tools for photographers, I offer a different perspective, emphasizing the importance of purchasing fine art nature photography out of genuine appreciation rather than succumbing to external influences.

My candid approach is that if someone needs to convince you to buy photography, you probably shouldn’t. The act of buying fine art photography should be a personal journey driven by an emotional connection to the piece, with the understanding that the value should be apparent to the buyer without external persuasion.

I believe in the significance of finding art that resonates with the individual. The chosen artwork should move the buyer on a personal level rather than merely following trends or filling empty walls. If nature prints don’t align with personal taste, individuals should explore other art forms that do.

Having said all of that, if you are a person who truly appreciates fine art photography for the way it makes you feel when you look at it, this article is for you. If you are looking to transform the look and feel of your room with a large format fine art photo print, you absolutely can do that. I believe in the transformational power of high quality wall art, because I have seen it.

Your Approach to Buying Fine Art Photography

When you buy fine art photography you have to make two main decisions, among other smaller ones. Those decisions are: “What image am I buying?” and “Where will I hang it?”.

Sometimes the art collector knows that she/he wants to brighten the bedroom with an art piece, but is just not sure what the right photo print is. This is the scenario when you “know the space but not the image”. Meaning, you have already settled on the location of where to display a brand new photo artwork and now it is just a matter of figuring out what would go well in your room.

Other times it is the reverse. You “know the image but not the space”. What does that mean? It means you have somehow come across a fine art photograph that has just won your heart for one reason or another. You are in love with it and have to have it. Now you have to decide the best wall for where it should be displayed. Maybe you have gone so far that you have already purchased the printed photograph and have it in your possession. This is a common scenario when people buy from art fairs.

When buying fine art photography there is no right or wrong approach. However, it is good for you to understand where you personally are in the process, because then you will know the parameters within which you need to make the rest of your decisions.

SHOP Fine Art Photography Print –  Glory Over the Ocean

Selecting the Space for Your Photo Fine Art

Before you buy fine art photography you may find that you “know the image but not the space”. Let’s examine this scenario, which is easier because the options are quite finite. Unlike the opposite scenario “you know the space but not the image” here the choices are not limitless. You only have so many rooms and walls in your home or office to choose from.

The factors you have to consider in this scenario are several:

  • Mood – What is the mood of the image and what room would be most appropriate to bring that mood in.
  • Size – What is the size of the printed artwork and what walls in your interior would work well – you don’t want it to look too big or too small.
  • Color – What are the predominant colors of the image and how do they, or not, match the rest of the decor in the room.
  • Orientation – Is your fine art photo vertical or horizontal? Will it look better on a long and wide wall, or on a narrower one?
  • Preference – At the end disregard all of the above if you have examined all of them and they point you to a decision that does not sit well with you. You have to be happy with the final choice and if you are not, the rest is just mechanics that did not serve their purpose.

On the other hand your starting point may be that you “neither know the space nor the image”. If that is your situation, I would recommend starting with the space first and then selecting the right image for it. In my opinion this is an easier process than the reverse. The reason for this is that you will be starting with the narrow choice and then moving to the wide. That way you won’t find yourself having to fit a square peg into a round hole.

Choosing a Fine Art Photo Image

If you are considering buying fine art photography but have not selected the perfect image yet, I would recommend finding your display wall first (see previous section). If you have that out of the way, now you need to find an artwork that will compliment your space quite well.

There are many considerations that go into this. Do you want the fine art photo to be a focal point and a central decor in your room or do you just want it to nicely blend with the rest? Do you want it to pop and grab attention the moment someone sets foot in the room, or do you want it to take a while to be noticed? Have you selected a wall space which is properly illuminated – if not should you look for a brighter image which does not require much additional light? Should you get a long and wide image or a narrow and tall one? Is a triptych, or grouped art, better for your interior or a single piece would serve a better purpose?

The choices and combinations could be quite different. However, one factor needs to play a major role – what type of images do you personally like? Is it mountains, forests, rivers & oceans, canyons & deserts, abstracts, etc. What type of fine art photo will warm your heart the most? That is what you are after.

Deciding the Right Size When Buying Fine Art Photography

Choosing the perfect print size for your wall art is crucial to achieving an elegant and harmonious decor. To make the right decision, you need to consider various factors.

First, understand the limitations set by the vendor/artist from where you will be buying your photography. Look at the maximum print sizes offered and make sure that what you are looking for is available. If your desired size exceeds these limits, you can explore alternatives such as finding another artist. Alternatively, you can opt for a triptych display, which would allow you to get the image you want in the size you want, but it will be in 3 pieces.

Budget constraints should also be taken into account, as larger (and high quality) prints can significantly increase costs, especially when considering shipping.

In addition, when buying fine art photography be mindful of your wall’s physical size and features, accommodating elements like outlets or vents. The type and size of furniture in the room, the presence of other art, and the intended focal point should guide your choice.

Consider the viewing distance, keeping in mind whether the photo print will be observed up close, from a distance, or both. Grouped prints can be treated as a single entity when determining the appropriate size.

Visualizing the print on your wall, either using art visualization software or simple methods like tape or paper, is crucial to making an informed decision. While there are principles to guide you, ultimately, the perfect size is one that aligns well with your preferences and complements your interior. Ultimately, personal preference plays a significant role in achieving a visually pleasing result.

What is the Best Fine Art Photography Medium

Choosing the best print medium when buying fine art photographs is crucial to successfully decorating any interior space. In this section, we will briefly explore the four most common types of fine art print mediums: paper, canvas, metal, and acrylic.

Paper prints are one of the most popular print mediums for fine art photographs. They are affordable, versatile, and offer a wide range of possibilities. There are several types of paper available, including matte, glossy, and fine art papers. Matte paper is a great choice for images with a lot of detail, while glossy paper can make colors appear more vibrant.

Canvas prints have become increasingly desired in recent years. They offer a unique texture and depth to fine art photographs that cannot be achieved with paper prints. There are several types of canvas available, including traditional, gallery wrap, and framed canvas. Traditional canvas art is stretched onto a wooden frame and is perfect for framing. Gallery wrap canvas art is stretched over a thicker wooden frame and has the image wrapped around the sides, making them perfect for displaying without a frame. Framed canvas prints are traditional canvas prints that are framed, giving them a more polished look.

Metal prints are a modern and unique way to display fine art photographs. They are printed directly onto aluminum sheets, creating a sleek and glossy finish. Some of the benefits of metal prints are their vibrant colors, high gloss contemporary look and feel, and extreme durability and longevity. Metal prints are considered a high-end / high quality print medium.

Acrylic prints are another modern print medium that has become a favorite for nature and landscape photographers, focusing on high end fine art. They are printed onto highly specialized photo paper and face mounted with acrylic sheets, creating a high-gloss and durable finish. One of the unique properties of acrylic is its clarity and depth. Acrylic prints are also known for their vibrant colors and gallery quality display. At the top of the price range acrylics deservedly stand as the best image print medium.

The Best Frame When Buying Fine Art Photography

Selecting a frame when buying fine art photography is another decision, assuming you want to frame the artwork in the first place. Mounting a high-quality frame around a landscape print can create an impressive piece of wall art that can make the print stand out and transform a room interior. However, with numerous framing options available, it can be difficult to decide which one fits your fine art photo best. Using quality materials alone does not guarantee a great result. The frame and liner type must be carefully selected to bring out the best in the photo image.

Whether you should frame a fine art photo print or not is subjective. There are benefits to either option. Framing a photograph creates a separation between the art and the wall, marking a clear delineation between the print and the rest of the room interior. When done well, the frame makes the art print stand out and guides the viewer’s eyes straight onto the image itself. A frame around a fine art photograph also makes it more complete, adding an element of wholeness around its contours that accentuates the art in a more prominent way. Framing a print properly can bring a classic fine art gallery or museum style mood to the room, making a powerful statement that can cause the wall art to dominate the interior in a very positive way.

On the other hand, some people prefer the look of frameless fine art photo prints. If you are one of those art collectors, this is a reason not to have your art print framed. Another reason to not frame your art is because you want a clean, simple, and minimalist style. Some people prefer just that. In addition, if your room already has that contemporary look and feel to it, a fine art gallery style framed print may not fit best. A third reason you may skip the frame, with the purchase of a new fine art photograph, is cost. Adding a frame to any art usually costs more. Placing a cheap frame on an expensive print does not make sense. Therefore, a good quality frame will add to the price tag. Furthermore, frames add to the overall art physical dimensions and weight, which adds to shipping costs.

In conclusion, choosing the right frame for your landscape print is an art itself. There is no black and white formula, and it takes a keen eye to discern the best framing selection in any situation.

Where to Buy Fine Art Photography

When considering the purchase of fine art photography, there are key factors to bear in mind. To make a well-informed choice, it’s crucial to first reflect on your preferences and priorities. The process begins by selecting the perfect image, followed by contemplating factors such as limited edition availability, print size, quality, price, and the option to view the print in person. Additionally, the decision of whether to buy directly from the artist or through an intermediary plays a significant role in supporting the art community.

In determining where to acquire fine art photography, it’s beneficial to clarify several considerations. Your stance on each of these considerations will help narrow down your options. While the order of these considerations is not fixed, starting with the selection of the image is recommended. This is important because your liking of the piece that will adorn your space is crucial. You don’t necessarily need a very specific idea of the ideal picture, but having some concept or narrowing it down to a theme can be helpful. This allows you to compare similar images from different photography sources within the same category.

When seeking to purchase fine art photography, consider the variables important to you, such as: type of image, limited vs open edition prints, print size, print quality, price range, buying directly from the artist vs through a middle man, etc.

Various avenues exist for purchasing fine art photography, including buying directly from the artist or from online marketplaces like Lumas, Saatchi Art, etc. It’s worth noting that buying directly from the artist is the optimal way to support the art community.

How to Negotiate Fine Art Photography

Negotiating the purchase of fine art photography requires skill and understanding to create a mutually beneficial transaction.

Understanding the quality and value of the artwork is paramount in negotiations. Emphasizing the importance of evaluating the content, image quality, and physical materials used in the print. Additionally, understanding the subjective nature of the value, considering extrinsic, intrinsic, and personal aspects, is crucial.

Before entering negotiations, comprehending the full pricing structure is essential. Buyers need to be aware of potential additional costs such as shipping charges, taxes, and insurance. The source of the purchase, whether directly from the artist or through a gallery, also impacts the pricing, with direct purchases often being more cost-effective.

Several negotiation “don’ts” should be avoided to steer clear of offensive practices. Undermining the art, lowballing, and comparing prices between photographers is not encouraged. Also testing the waters if not genuinely interested in buying is not recommended. Serious inquiries should follow an understanding of the artwork’s uniqueness and its value first.

On the positive side, productive “dos” for negotiations include determining if the price is negotiable, inquiring whether some flexibility might exist. Exploring different (less expensive) print mediums, considering open edition prints, asking about upcoming sales, and making multiple purchases are recommended strategies. Moreover, negotiating better prices can involve buying inventory items, offering to pick up the print locally, paying in cash to avoid electronic payment fees, and even proposing goods or services in exchange for a discount.

In conclusion, effective negotiation of fine art prints involves a comprehensive understanding of the artwork’s quality, value, and pricing structure. Respectful and informed negotiation approaches can go a long way as opposed to offensive practices.

Hanging After Buying Fine Art Photography

So, you’ve acquired a stunning piece of fine art photography, and now you’re faced with the task of hanging it on your wall. The question is, how do you do it like a professional?

By now it is assumed that you have already made decisions about the artwork, its location on the wall, and its position concerning other elements in the room.

To ensure the correct position, consider the vertical and horizontal alignment, as well as ensuring the art is perfectly level horizontally.

Different hanging systems require varying approaches. Whether it’s cables & rail, direct wall mount, frame cable, or French cleat, understanding the system first is crucial for accurate positioning.

For each hanging system, calculate anchor positions accurately and mark them on the wall. Use a pencil to create small “+” marks to guide the placement of screws or anchors.

Once you’ve marked the exact spots on the wall, securing anchors is crucial for a safe and stable installation. The type of anchor and the way you place it will also be determined by the type of wall you have: drywall, plaster, studs, brick, etc.

To summarize, you want the artwork to first be positioned securely on the wall, in order to avoid falling and getting damaged. Second, it needs to be perfectly horizontal and well centered on the wall it is displayed on.

How to Light Fine Art Photography

Understanding how to light fine art photography in your home or business is crucial for bringing it to life. Whether you’re a seasoned fine art collector or a first-time purchaser of a masterpiece, grasping the nuances of illuminating photo prints is essential.

Merely hanging an expensive piece of photography fine art in a dimly lit room defeats the purpose. Art, be it a painting or photograph, crafted by a dedicated artist, is rich in details, shapes, and colors meant to be appreciated. Unfortunately, displaying fine art in inadequately lit spaces can obscure these elements. Conversely, with careful lighting, a fine art photo print can radiate its full glory, presenting the photographer’s intent. In essence, meticulous lighting has the power to breathe life into a masterpiece.

When illuminating a photo print, avoid direct sunlight. While fine art photography may appear captivating in direct sunlight, prolonged exposure can harm the artwork. Sunlight accurately renders colors and spans the entire visible light spectrum, but it also emits ultraviolet and infrared light, causing deterioration in colors and print quality.

Understanding the existing ambient light in the room is crucial. Consider both the intensity and color temperature of ambient light, as they impact how the photo print will be perceived.

Determining the right light intensity involves balancing ambient light and ensuring the art piece stands out without being intrusive. Evaluate wall color, texture, and personal preferences to decide the optimal brightness.

Carefully consider the distance between the light source and the photo print to avoid heat damage. The angle of illumination matters, with a 30% angle often recommended for optimal fine art lighting.

In conclusion, proper photo print illumination involves a careful balance of factors to showcase the artwork in its best light while ensuring longevity and minimizing potential damage.

Care and Maintenance for Fine Art Photography

If you have purchased a priceless fine art photography artwork and want to ensure it remains vibrant for a long time, you may want to learn about caring for it. Caring for photography wall art is a multi-faceted approach. This section examines the cautions and actions one can proactively take in order to extend the life of their photography fine art purchase.

It is important to understand what factors can cause decay in order to properly care for wall art. According to the Image Permanence Institute (IPI), some of the forces which cause decay of photographs are light, heat, pollution, moisture, and even the framing materials themselves. These forces can cause damage such as yellowing, cracking, delamination, mold, and fading.

Light has a damaging effect on photographs. However, not all light types are equal. Each light type carries a different amount of UV energy, which is the damaging element. The Image Permanence Institute states that “Each type of light (tungsten, fluorescent, and sunlight) contains different amounts of UV energy. Sunlight contains the highest UV levels and is the most damaging, followed by fluorescent. Tungsten carries very little UV energy.”

Heat can cause yellowing, cracking, and delamination of a photo print. Heat can cause damage even when UV-protective glass is used.

Pollution can cause fading, yellowing, and cracking. The air in a room can become polluted from the outside. The pollution can be in the form of ozone, oxides of nitrogen, or other gasses. In addition, the room air can be polluted by cleaning agents, cooking fumes, and cigarette smoke.

To protect your photo art prints from these factors, it is recommended to store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Use UV-protective glass or acrylic to frame your prints. Avoid hanging your prints in areas with high humidity, such as bathrooms or kitchens. Regularly dust your prints with a soft, dry cloth. If you need to clean your prints, use a microfiber cloth and a small amount of water. Avoid using cleaning agents or solvents, as they can cause damage to your prints.

By following these tips, you can extend the life of your fine art photography investment and enjoy your wall art prints for years to come.

Where to Buy Photography Art

Choosing the right place where to buy fine art photography involves several crucial considerations. To make an informed decision, it’s essential to reflect on your preferences and priorities first. The process begins with selecting the perfect image, followed by contemplating factors such as limited edition availability, print size, quality, price, and the option to see the print in person. Additionally, deciding whether to purchase directly from the artist or through a middleman plays a significant role in supporting the art community. In this article, we will review these considerations and explore various avenues for purchasing fine art photography.

Deciding Where to Buy Fine Art Photography: Considerations

When deciding where to buy fine art photography it is good to get clear on several considerations. Where you personally stand on each one of them will help narrow your options.

Finding the Right Photo Image to Buy?

While the rest of the considerations are not in any particular order, I always recommend starting with choosing the image itself first. Why is this so important? Because, as I have often said in many other articles, it is crucial that you like the piece that you will decorate your room with. You do not necessarily have to have a very specific idea of the ideal picture you’re looking for. However, having some idea or having narrowed it down to at least a theme would be helpful. That would allow you to compare similar images in the same category from different photography sources.

Does Limited Edition Photography Matter?

When you’re looking to buy fine art photography, ask yourself if it’s important to purchase a limited edition print. Limited editions are important to some art collectors; however, there are those that are indifferent. Given that not everyone who sells photography offers limited edition artworks, it will be important for you to know what you value before you begin your search.

What Photo Print Size Are You Buying?

Another important consideration when purchasing fine art photography is the size of the print you’re looking to acquire. While most photography sellers carry a variety of sizes, if you require a particularly large size print, that may be a limiting factor for some sellers.

Does Print Quality Matter When Buying Photography?

You should also think about the print quality you are looking for when buying fine art photography. Most places will sell prints of a reasonable quality. However, they will not be of equal quality. This will be especially important when you are looking for high end artwork. If you are the type of an art collector who is seeking high quality photography prints you should do your research thoroughly.

Should Price Affect Where You Buy Photography?

Similar to Quality and size the print price will affect your choice when buying fine art photography. Unless you are independently wealthy and budget is not a consideration for you, you should understand that fine art photography on the market is not priced the same. If you need to fall into a particular price range make sure that the vendors and artists that you are considering also fall into it.

Do You Have to See the Print First?

In the world of Ecommerce we have become more and more accustomed to purchasing just about anything online. Buying and selling fine art photography on the Internet is a real thing. However, anytime we buy anything from a website it can sometimes be challenging to trust the seller if we are a first-time buyer. Additionally, are you the type of collector who has to see the artwork in person, touch it, and then decide if it is the right one for you? If that is you I would recommend ignoring all the online buying options In this article and focusing on the in-person ones.

Considerations for the Artist Photographer

Have you considered whether you want to buy directly from the artist or through a middleman? It is true that when buying from a mega art online platform you might be able to get a better price. Did you know however, that many of those platforms take a large commission on every single sale which can range between 30% and 50%. Furthermore, because these businesses are always interested in making sales, they will often heavily discount the artwork which leaves even less money in the pocket of the artist who created the piece in the first place. If it is important to you to support the artist directly in the best way possible, buying directly from him or her is the best thing you can do. This is like buying from local farmers instead of from big chain stores. With the one caveat that, given the convenience of the internet, you can support photographic artists directly all over the world.

Where to Buy Photography Prints

Now that we have discussed the main consideration points when buying fine art photography we can look at some examples of where to go and find that awesome artwork.

Fine Art Photography Websites

Just like many other things, shopping online might give you the largest choice when deciding where to buy fine art photography. In this section we will specifically focus on some of those mega art platforms that were mentioned earlier. Although this article is not meant to provide a review of these stores, it is intended to give you a list of some of the most popular photography websites, as well as give you a tiny little bit of information for some of them.

There are several things to note here. First, the art sold on each will be a slightly different style. This goes back to one of the very first points above deciding the type of image you are looking for. Second, their pricing structure can vary quite a bit. Third, some of them offer an array of print mediums others focus specifically on one kind. For example canvas or giclee prints. Finally, their business terms with the participating artists can also vary. Some take less commission and others take more. Some promote the art of their community others leave it up to each individual artist to handle that. Some procure every single order and produce every single print others leave it to the individual artist to own the fulfillment process. Also, some platforms allow just about anybody to sell art on their website and others have an established curation process.

In no particular order, here is the list:

Photographs for Sale Online

There is no shortage of photographs for sale online offered by individual artists. It is amazing the talent pool which exists out there. There are so many photographers that produce imagery which is nothing short of breathtaking. Many of those photographers are offering their photography art on an individual website that they own and maintain. These are the people who not only have to spend time to go and capture amazing photography, but they also have to dedicate a considerable amount of time towards maintaining and promoting their own brand. As someone who does this, I can personally vouch for how extremely difficult and labor intensive it is. Writing this very article is one of those efforts.

One thing that is usually true for these types of photographers is that they take a great deal of pride and effort in their craft, brand, and customer service. In addition, many of them choose to offer the highest quality photo prints that can be found on the art world market. You may end up paying slightly more for your piece but you will get personalized attention and a high quality print.

So how do we find these artists who have photographs for sale online on their own websites? A simple Google search will yield quite a few valuable results. However, because all of these individuals are competing with the mega art platforms:

A) You may need to scroll down through the first set of results that Google returns which will be all of these large platforms.

B) You have to be more specific in your Google searches. Instead of using broad search keywords, such as “fine art photography”, use some specific search terms where are you define the location of where the image was taken, the print medium you want, and/or the type of photography theme/category you are looking for. Here are some examples you can try:

  • “mountains photography acrylic prints”
  • “high end fine art prints for sale”
  • “fine art nature photography prints”
  • “hawaii photo art prints”
  • “mountains nature photography”
  • “colorado fine art nature photography for sale”
  • … and so on

When seeking out photographers, it’s essential to bear in mind that a photographer’s ranking on Google doesn’t necessarily reflect their proficiency in photography or the quality of their prints. To clarify, a high position in Google search results doesn’t automatically translate to superior photo print quality, and vice versa. It’s crucial to distinguish between brand marketing and print quality, recognizing that these are distinct aspects that aren’t inherently connected to one another.

Fine Art Photography Galleries

Exploring fine art photography galleries provides an alternative avenue for purchasing artwork. We have to recognize that art galleries are unevenly distributed across the United States, with some regions boasting a vibrant community while others lack a significant presence. Depending on your geographical location, this may influence the feasibility of this option. One advantage of visiting a nearby art gallery is the opportunity to personally experience the artwork. However, due to the substantial expenses associated with operating a physical gallery, the prices tend to be higher.

Local Art Fairs

Local art fairs are a great way to find original fine art photography at an affordable price. Again depending on where you live art fairs may or may not be available to you. However, if they are available and you are looking for authentic art, you want to buy directly from the artist, and you want to see the artwork first hand before you buy, local art fairs are really a great option.

Fine Art Photography Near Me

If you go to Google search and type “fine art photography near me” some of the first results will be physical businesses that offer photography in your area. Those may turn out to be good choices for you, again if you’re looking to buy local and not online. Nevertheless, Google will also show you results of photographers selling art who are outside of your area. Therefore, this approach can allow you options to find good photography both online and locally.

Why Buy Nature Wall Art – Or Should You?

Are you asking yourself why you should buy nature wall art? In the age of the internet, there are numerous articles promoting the benefits of nature wall art photography prints for your home, office, or other interior spaces. While these articles may serve as marketing tools encouraging you to purchase such art from photographers whose work I respect, I believe it is important to approach the subject from a different perspective. This article aims to provide a personal opinion on the matter and emphasizes the importance of buying nature wall art because you genuinely appreciate it, rather than being convinced by external factors.

Should You Buy Nature Photography Wall Art?

As someone who also markets and sells my own nature photography wall art, I am writing this article with full transparency, knowing it might not be the best sales pitch. But honesty matters to me. So, here’s my genuine opinion:

If someone has to convince you to buy photography, don’t buy it.

Buying art should be a personal journey, driven by an emotional connection to the piece. You should see the value for yourself, not because someone pointed it out.

When you find a landscape photograph that speaks to your soul, you’ll feel it. You just know. If that is not happening, don’t bother making the purchase. You will be the one looking at the artwork on the wall every day. It is important that it brings you joy and appreciation.

The Artwork You Buy Should Move You

Finding art that stirs your soul is an essential part of creating a space that feels truly your own. It’s not about following trends or filling empty walls – it’s about surrounding yourself with pieces that resonate with you on a personal level.

If nature prints aren’t your thing, consider buying something that is. If wall art decor doesn’t appeal to you, put something in the room that does and moves you.

On the other hand, if you enjoy landscape photos, find something that moves you and has personal value. Art is visual and because of that its impact is immediate. You know whether you love it or not the moment you lay eyes on it, and you don’t need anyone to convince you one way or the other. The art itself should be the only factor that tells you that.

Are Fine Art Nature Photography Prints a Good Investment?

My initial response leans towards a negative stance, especially if the expectation is solely financial gain. However, if your definition of “investment” encompasses non-monetary returns, such as the aesthetic transformation of a space, then buying large nature wall art photos can indeed serve as excellent decor, elevating the overall interior design.

However, I would not recommend investing in fine art photography with the expectation of increasing your financial wealth.

Despite claims from some reputable landscape photographers suggesting the appreciation of fine art photography over time, a closer examination of the evidence reveals that such general assertions lack validity.

  1. While it is true that certain fine art pieces, predominantly paintings, appreciate in value, photographs, especially those captured in the digital era, seldom follow this trend. The rare instances where photographs do appreciate often pertain to images taken before the widespread adoption of digital technology.

  2. Artists whose art appreciates over time are a very small percentage, compared to all artists in the world and they are usually referred to as “blue chip artists”.

In the art world, the term “blue-chip” denotes established and highly celebrated artists with lengthy and successful careers marked by consistent critical acclaim and major solo exhibitions spanning decades. Similar to the stability associated with reliable companies in the stock market, blue-chip artists are considered the art market’s equivalent, known for their wide recognition even beyond art circles. Their works consistently command high prices at prestigious auction houses like Christie’s and Sotheby’s, often setting records for their respective styles or movements.

Some of the most famous blue chip artists are all painters and most are not alive.

  3. According to Sotheby’s “A well-known photographer will have auction records, which you can track on sites such as Artnet or Artprice.”. My question is – what percentage of all the photographers today fall into this category?

  4. YouTube is full of “how-to” videos and narratives where individuals share their paths to financial success in various endeavors. Surprisingly, as of January 2024, not a single video exists specifically discussing how to generate income through fine art photography investments. Wouldn’t you think that if there was at least one success story, it would have been posted? In fact, this is one of the videos that comes up: Warren Buffett On Investing In Art, where he says: “you can say a great painting probably will have some value 500 years from now”.

  5. Examining some of the most expensive photographs ever sold, the second most expensive transacted at $6.5 million. One would think that the artist who sold that print sells art which appreciates over time and is sold for more money on the secondary market. Surprisingly, the artist’s other works sell for less on the secondary market, questioning the assumed correlation between high sales prices and appreciating value. Here is a real example:

Image sells on the artist’s website for $13,100.

Landscape-Image-Sold-On-Website

The same image, size, and frame offered on eBay for $5,999, which is less than half the price.

Landscape-Image-Sold-On-Ebay

The same image (size and frame not specified) sold on Invaluable Auction for $3,500.

Landscape-Image-Sold-On-Auction

Again, my point is: while a fine art photo print can undoubtedly enhance the ambiance of a home or office, if the goal is financial growth, there are numerous alternative investment options which promise more favorable outcomes.

In essence, purchasing a fine art photo print should be seen as similar to acquiring a piece of furniture rather than a guaranteed financial investment—unless the photographer belongs to the rare group whose works command high prices. Even then, there is no absolute assurance, as emphasized by industry experts cautioning against expectations of guaranteed returns. As Anthony Hartley from The Photographers’ Gallery in London advises: “But we always caution about investment. There is never a guarantee. Crucially, buy first of all what you love.”

Are There Health Benefits to Nature Photography Wall Art?

Numerous articles on the internet assert the health benefits of landscape photography, primarily aimed at promoting the sales of related artwork. In contrast, I adopt a slightly different perspective.

First, having conducted my own research, although existing studies (referenced below) do illustrate the calming impact of nature images on the human body, the assertion of “health benefits” appears somewhat overstated to me.

Second, as a landscape photographer myself I do not believe in the approach of using such studies as a means to convince potential customers why they should buy my nature wall art.

Some of the studies cited in those articles are:

If you examine these studies you will see that they do not involve nature photography but the authors who reference them make correlations. In other words, because walking through a forest is good for you, therefore looking at a forest picture must have similar effects.

Other studies have been conducted, which are more specifically addressing the effects of nature art/photos, such as:

> Viewing Nature Scenes Positively Affects Recovery of Autonomic Function Following Acute-Mental Stress

In simple terms, researchxers conducted a study to see if looking at different types of scenes before experiencing stress could affect how the body recovers from that stress. They used two types of scenes: nature scenes (like trees and grass) and built scenes (like city views without much nature). They measured the body’s autonomic function, which is related to the automatic functions like heart rate, using a method called heart rate variability.

When people were stressed, their heart rate, blood pressure, and other cardiovascular measures increased, and this increase was similar for both nature and built scenes. However, after the stress, the recovery was better when people had seen nature scenes. Specifically, the part of the nervous system responsible for calming the body (parasympathetic activity) was higher after looking at nature scenes compared to built scenes.

The study also looked at how the body responds while just looking at the scenes without any stress. They found that the variability in heart rate during the first 5 minutes of looking at nature scenes was greater than when looking at built scenes. This suggests that nature scenes may have a positive effect on the body even before experiencing stress.

> The effects of views of nature on autonomic control

This study found that looking at nature scenes, even in a controlled indoor environment, can positively affect the autonomic nervous system, which controls various bodily functions. The researchers measured heart rate variability (HRV), a non-invasive way to assess this system, and found that when people looked at nature scenes, there was an increase in markers of parasympathetic activity, which is associated with relaxation. This suggests that simply viewing nature has a calming effect on the body’s internal processes. The heart rate and blood pressure of the participants did not significantly change during the study. Overall, the research provides evidence that observing natural scenes can influence the way the heart is regulated, promoting a more relaxed state.

> Viewing Landscapes Is More Stimulating Than Scrambled Images After a Stressor: A Cross-disciplinary Approach

The study looked at whether looking at paintings of nature scenes could help people recover from stress. They had 30 participants look at either normal landscape paintings or scrambled versions of the same paintings after a stressful task. The results showed that those who looked at the normal paintings felt less sleepy and sluggish, and their stress hormone levels decreased more slowly compared to those who looked at scrambled images. The study suggests that viewing nature paintings can be more stimulating and helpful for reducing drowsiness after stress.

If you’re buying nature wall art for an office, a facility, or another public interior, then studies such as the above might matter to you. However, if you’re buying for yourself, I would argue that they are irrelevant. The only thing that matters is whether the print you’re buying speaks to you personally or not. Whether it has a positive emotional impact on you personally or not. And I know from experience that the same picture can impact different people in different ways.

You can decide for yourself whether these studies’ findings are enough reasons for why you should buy a nature wall art piece. However, my opinion is that all of this is irrelevant, and you should make a judgment based on the particular value a specific image has to you. The reality is that having nature artwork on your wall is not a must. People buy it because they like it.

Getting Real - Who Buys Landscape Photography and Why?

Simply answered who buys landscape photography are the people who value it and can afford it. It is those whose emotions are stirred when they look at it. It is the people who “want” it and not those who “need” it.

Buying photography fine art is an emotional buy. Most people don’t need nature wall art prints in their home as a necessity. We could not compare them to food, water, air, sleep, etc. People buy because they like it and they want it.

People pay more money for things, simply because of looks, even when the nicer looking thing does the exact same thing as the regularly looking thing. They buy nature photography for the same reason people buy a cool looking car instead of one that just runs, a contemporary looking home instead of an average looking one, or furniture with better looking design than the normal one. People like visual appeal because it affects their emotions and they pay more money for that.

It’s important to note that people will still go to the doctor, the car mechanic, the plumber, etc. even when the economy is such that art sales are low. Art is a luxury item, and people will prioritize their basic needs over luxury items. However, when people have the means to do so, they will buy fine art photography that speaks to them emotionally.

The Transformative Power of Nature Wall Art

I truly believe that hanging large nature wall art prints can really make a positive impact on the vibe of any room. It’s not just about decorating; it’s about transforming your space into something amazing.

Take this simple interactive example below. Toggle between the two tabs several times and observe which version looks better to you personally. The one with the bare wall, or the one with the nature art print? If this were your living room, which version would enjoy more every day?

If you care about how your space looks and feels, a big landscape print can be a game-changer. It’s not just a piece of art; it becomes a focal point that uplifts the entire room. Sure, one item alone won’t make or break the feel of a space, but when you combine it with other elements like nice furniture and wall decor, the overall design really affects how you experience the room. The more you love the look and feel of your space, the happier you’ll be spending time in it. And nature wall art can add that extra touch.

Imagine this: the picture showcases a place you love, maybe a spot you visit often or a place with special memories. Having that constant reminder can bring back those positive feelings regularly, making your space even more enjoyable.

What about, what I call “imaginative transportation”? Maybe the image is of a place you’ve never been to, but it resonates with you for some reason. It inspires you and causes you to dream. I can relate – I used to live in Missouri, far from the mountains I grew up around. Looking at pictures of mountains made me feel better, letting me dream of visiting and living there again someday.

Design Quiz!

INTERACTIVE EXERCISE: Below is an interactive example with three different photography prints wall art options for the exact same living room. Click through all the tabs and decide which wall art decor best adorns this living room. You may intuitively know the answer after comparing all three of them. However, do you know why you picked the one you did?

SHOP Wall Art Photo Prints
Purity / Far in the North / Ancient Beauty

The correct answer is Design 1. Was it obvious to you? Why or why not? It is true that all three images are stunning. Nevertheless, as wall art, they do not add equal visual aesthetic value to this particular living room. Let’s break it down in reverse order:

Design 3 – The image view is gorgeous, but it is from ancient Greece, while the artwork is hanging in a contemporary living room. It has some dark tones, which do not seem to match well in this bright interior. Its color scheme does not really match that of the room. For these three reasons, this wall art is not a great match for this living room.

Design 2 – Again, another amazing photograph. However, it has almost half of it filled with nearly black color. This would not be an issue, even in a brightly lit room such as this, if there were at least some decor that matched this dark color. Right now, it overpowers the entire room. Additionally, the color scheme, except for some blue, does not match that of the space. While not terrible, this wall art print is not the best choice of the three options for this living room.

Design 1 – This ocean abstract immediately fits right in and adds tremendous decor aesthetic. The room is elevated in a skillful and seamless way. First, this slow-motion photograph looks very contemporary, greatly matching the style of the room. Second, its colors match those of the space almost perfectly – turquoise, white, blue, and beige. Third, its mood is both dreamy and tranquil, fitting the atmosphere very well. Fourth, its tones have brighter and darker hues but are not out of tune with those of the room. Fifth, this is a very clean and minimalist photograph that matches the minimalist interior style. Therefore, this panoramic wall art is a great fit for this living room and, thus, the winner of all three options.

1. Choosing the Ideal Living Room Wall for Your Wall Art

Embarking on the design journey of your living room’s wall art warrants careful consideration, and a strategic starting point can significantly enhance the entire process. While it’s not necessary to kick off with selecting the wall, doing so is highly recommended, as it sets the tone and establishes parameters influencing subsequent decisions in the design process. In this section, we will delve into the nuances of different living room wall layouts, identifying five fundamental scenarios for displaying photography wall art, accompanied by visual examples.

Wall behind the sofa

The quintessential canvas for living room photo wall art is the space behind the sofa. In instances where the sofa is centrally placed without a direct wall behind it, this specific scenario is not covered. However, when your sofa is backed up against a wall, it becomes an opportune facade for artistic expression. The wall behind the sofa offers ample space, as sofas typically are the largest furniture pieces in the room. This large backdrop allows for diverse choices in showcasing artwork, and the symbiosis between the sofa and the photo wall decor often harmonizes, completing the room’s interior design.

PRO TIP: Panoramic wall art makes for great decoration above a sofa.

SHOP Wall Art Photo Print – Perfect Five

Adjacent Wall

Adjacent walls to the sofa present additional possibilities for displaying wall art, especially when unencumbered by a mounted TV. These walls can serve as supplementary spaces, either in conjunction with the wall behind the sofa or as standalone decorative spaces. Take note of how the black and white artwork effortlessly elevates the ambiance of the room’s interior. It perfectly balances the space by complementing the black coffee table and the contrasting black window frame situated at its opposite end. The artwork not only upholds the living room’s simplicity and contemporary style but also significantly amplifies its overall aesthetic appeal.

SHOP Wall Art Photo Print – Intricacy

Other Walls

Some living rooms have architectures that provide wall space beyond the sofa and its adjacent counterparts. This presents an excellent opportunity to craft a thematic display using multiple pieces of wall art. Consider the example below, featuring a vivid portrayal of nature on the wall behind the sofa with colorful aspen trees. Additionally, the room is complemented by a second wall adorned with abstract images of aspen leaves and rainbow tree barks. The combination creates a harmonious and vibrant narrative within the living space.

PRO TIP: Creating a wall art theme by using more than one wall and artwork is a great way to set the mood in the room.

Above the Fireplace

Living rooms equipped with fireplaces offer an alternative location for impactful wall art. Whether it’s a single piece or a complement to the wall behind the sofa, the fireplace area provides an additional focal point. However, caution must be exercised to ensure the artwork is not exposed to high temperatures, which could potentially damage the cherished pieces.

PRO TIP: Vertical wall art often is a powerful choice above a fireplace.

Blended Style

In open-concept homes where living and dining areas seamlessly merge, a blended wall style emerges, offering abundant wall space for creative photography wall art displays. This scenario, common in open-concept constructions, allows for imaginative and creative design possibilities, transforming the integrated living and dining areas into an artistic backdrop for visual storytelling.

PRO TIP: A gallery photo wall is a powerful art statement on large wall spaces.

2. Wall Art Arrangement for Living Room

When enhancing the aesthetic appeal of a living room with wall art, achieving an optimal arrangement is paramount for a professional finish. This section explores the crucial elements of positioning artwork on the wall, selecting the appropriate format and orientation, and determining the right size for your wall art.

Positioning - How do you position wall art in a living room?

The positioning of artwork on the wall depends significantly on the wall type and its surroundings, including furniture and other decor elements. Various scenarios guide the placement decisions, and we will explore several examples:

WALL ART ABOVE SOFA: Placing wall art above the sofa is a common choice. When doing that there are times when we want to center the wall art with the center of the sofa and there are times when it makes sense not to do that. However, off-center arrangements can also work effectively, especially when there is an actual interruption or transition in the wall.

PRO TIP: When to opt for centering
Opting to center the wall art above the sofa is most effective when the wall it adorns spans the entire length of the sofa and extends further. Essentially, by strategically placing the artwork, we establish a direct connection between the art and furniture, while the wall is the cohesive visual bond.

INTERACTIVE EXERCISE: Examining the interactive examples below depicting various wall art positions on the same wall reveals significant distinctions resulting from even minor adjustments in placement. Take note of how the centrally positioned example seamlessly complements the sofa. This serves as an important demonstration of the symbiotic relationship between art and furniture, contributing to a harmonious interior. Conversely, when the wall art is off-center, it creates an unprofessional and distracting appearance.

SHOP Wall Art Photo Print – The Cathedral

PRO TIP: When NOT to center wall art with a sofa
Just because we are mounting a wall art above the sofa does not always mean that it has to be centered with it. There are plenty of examples when it does not make sense to do that. Review the 3 examples below. What do you notice is different from the one above? Even though they are completely different room interiors and different photographs, there is a common pattern here. It is the relationship between the sofa and the wall. Unlike the example above, where the span of the sofa and wall were cohesive, in the examples below the sofa is not centered on the wall where the wall art is mounted. In each case there is some sort of an interruption or transition in the wall. Because of that, we cannot make a direct relationship between art and furniture. In this case the relationship is between the art and the wall, and the furniture becomes a complement to that combination.

WALL ART ABOVE FURNITURE: When hanging wall art in a living room, it’s common to have furniture at the base of the wall you’ve chosen. In this case, the same principles as those when hanging above a sofa can apply. Examine the relationship between the wall and the furniture in order to determine the position of the wall art. In this example, it makes sense to center the wall art with the wood screen in order to create a cohesive presentation. The wood screen provides a visual anchor for the wall art, and centering the art helps to balance the composition.

SHOP Wall Art Photo Print – Field of Dreams

WALL ART ABOVE FIREPLACE: Placing wall art above a fireplace often involves centering the artwork on the wall. This is because fireplaces are typically centered, and centering the artwork above creates a sense of balance and visual harmony. Aligning the artwork with the fireplace mantelpiece further enhances the cohesive aesthetic.

SHOP Wall Art Photo Print – The Exodus

WALL ART ON THE FLOOR: Placing artwork on the floor of a living room and leaning it against the wall can create an impressive and inviting décor. This type of approach creates a more casual look which allows for more freedom in placement. The artwork becomes an extension of the room’s look and feel, and you have more liberty when it comes to positioning it. Additionally, when placing artwork on the floor you can easily switch it throughout the year to reflect the different seasons.

When using more than one piece, it is common to slightly overlap them. This can create a sense of cohesion and add visual interest to the space. Because the artwork is not fixed on the wall, you have the opportunity to change the position every so often if you wish to do so. This can be a great way to keep your décor fresh and up-to-date.

PRO TIP: Wall art pieces on the floor can be of different size and frame type.

WALL ART IN MULTIPLES / MINI GALLERY: Hanging multiple art pieces on a living room wall is another way to create a great décor. There are two main things you have to consider if you are going this route:

1. Overall positioning: If you are combining multiple pieces, take the total wall area they will occupy and decide the best position based on balance and proportion.

2. Individual positioning: Consider the size, format, and orientation of each piece when deciding their relative positions.

By following these tips, you can create a cohesive and visually appealing gallery wall that will add personality and style to your living room.

Wall Art Format - Choosing the Right Artistic Format

Choosing the right format of wall art for a living room is an important aspect of achieving a great aesthetic look. While there are various art formats, two of the most common are standard and panoramic. Standard art has an aspect ratio of 2:3 or 3:4, while panoramic art typically has ratios such as 1:3 or 1:2.

When to Use Standard or Panoramic Wall Art?
While there are no hard and fast rules, here are some guidelines to help you decide which format is best for your living room:

  • Consider the shape of the wall. If your wall is tall and narrow, a panoramic format will look better. If your wall is wide and short, a standard format will look better.
  • Consider whether the relationship is between the wall art and the wall, or the wall art and the furniture.
  • Remember that either format will work equally well the majority of times and you should also give weight to your personal preference here.

INTERACTIVE EXERCISE: Examine the 2 examples below. Each uses the same living room and wall but different format art. Can you make a strong case that one looks better than the other, simply on the criterion of format? Chances are that you will not be able to do so.

Wall Art Orientation - Horizontal vs. Vertical Placement

The orientation of the wall art (horizontal vs vertical) when decorating a living room works in very similar ways as the way format works. Again, it is important to pay attention to the wall size, format, and orientation, as well as the shape of any furniture below, with which you might be creating a relationship. Let’s take a look at several examples.

Horizontal
Works very well above sofa. In fact, most times when hanging wall art above a sofa you will be safe with horizontal orientation. The reason for this is that sofas are horizontally oriented and the walls above them are typically horizontally oriented, which creates good synergy all the way around. In some rare cases this may not be the case – see the very last example below.

SHOP Wall Art Photo Print – Wisdom

Vertical
There are also plenty of scenarios when a vertical oriented wall art fits well into the decor of a living room. There are several examples below.

Vertical – Above fireplace
Most often the wall of a fireplace is narrow and tall, which creates a vertically oriented wall. This presents a great opportunity to hang vertical wall art on it.

SHOP Wall Art Photo Print – Guardians of the Forest

Vertical – On the floor
When choosing to place artwork on the floor of a living room, vertical pieces tend to look better. Although there is no rule for this, visually it appears better.

Vertical – With Multiples
When using multiple pieces of artwork, it commonly looks pretty well when they are all vertically oriented. This is another case however, where this is not a hard rule and there are exceptions. The article What is a Triptych Print? explains the other scenarios well.

Vertical – Vertical Walls
Any type of a vertical wall in a living room (or any interior space for that matter) naturally is better suited for vertical wall art. The example below demonstrates a less common scenario in a living room – a sofa placed against a vertical wall. This is a good example of how vertical wall art works well above a sofa.

Sizing - Choosing the Right Wall Art Size

What is the right size when selecting wall art for a living room? There is no one right answer here, but use the concepts below as guidelines. While one could argue that this is a personal opinion, large pictures on the wall tend to make a bigger impact. This is especially true if you are aiming to create a Windows to Nature effect. A large high end print on any wall can actually stop a person in their tracks. This is the effect you get in a high quality art gallery. Therefore if you want to have a similar effect in your living room, a large and impressive photography wall art piece can be just the right thing to place on your wall. With that said you don’t want to overpower the room and actually go too far. On the other hand, you don’t want the art to be so small such that it is lost and barely noticeable in the room.

PRO TIP: Interior designer Emily Henderson says “there is something to be said for just one massive, striking piece”.

Therefore, how can I determine the right size for my wall art?

  • Pay attention to the wall size – Utilize negative space, allowing room for breathing and visual interest.
  • Striking a balance – Proportion artwork to wall size and furniture arrangement
  • Room size – Consider the overall size of the room when deciding the wall art size.
  • Read Interior Design With Nature Photography: Complete Guide.

Is there an app to arrange pictures on a wall?

Yes there is more than one app that helps to arrange and visualize pictures on a wall. There are also more than one options to visualize your wall art than using an app. For more information read How to visualize fine art prints on your wall?.

PRO TIP: Regardless of which option you use to visualize the artwork on your wall, it is always a good idea to do so before purchasing.

What art makes a living room look bigger?

There are many opinions out there as far as what wall art will make a room look bigger. In my opinion, the best way to make a room look bigger with wall art is to use an oversized landscape print of a “big view”. What do I mean and why? A “big view” is a large panorama with an expansive landscape and a distant horizon. Why do I claim that such a wall art photograph will make a room bigger? Because it creates the effect of having a big window in your wall, which opens a view to an outdoor world. It acts as an extension of the space that you are in. And when the image is captivating and beautiful it draws your attention and immediately transports to the location where the image was taken. Your eyes lock onto this landscape and you are immediately drawn in. Suddenly you find yourself looking into the far distance and now your small room seems like an extension of a larger word that is out there.

Feeling skeptical? Look at the example below. It is a small office with a small desk. What effect does the big view panorama have on you? Would you not agree that this wall art makes the room look bigger?

3. Selection: What kind of wall art is best for a living room?

Choosing the actual wall art image, regardless of size, format, and orientation, may be one of the most nuanced tasks when decorating a living room. The reason being that this is far from a mathematical formula or a black and white process. Nevertheless, there are some tips that you can use as guidance.

What do you like?

If you’re asking yourself, “What kind of pictures should I hang in my living room?”, take a moment and consider a different question: “What kind of pictures do I really like?” It’s crucial to identify what inspires you, uplifts your mood, and stirs your soul. If I could offer just one piece of advice regarding the type of wall art you should hang in your living room (or any room), it would be this: Choose something that you genuinely love!

PRO TIP: All the home décor and interior design ideas and tips are irrelevant if you don’t enjoy looking at what’s on your wall. When you purchase wall art for your home, you’re not only the one spending the money; you’re also the one who will be gazing at the artwork for as long as it adorns your wall. In many cases, this spans years. Therefore, begin by gaining clarity on what you truly appreciate.

What mood/feel do you want to bring to your living room with wall art?

What picture to put in the living room when the desire is to create a particular mood? Wall art photography can powerfully affect the mood in a room. Landscape photography images can bring a variety of moods (see below). What is your favorite?

Relaxing: Images capturing serene landscapes, such as tranquil lakes, gentle rolling hills, or peaceful meadows bathed in soft, diffused light, evoke a sense of calm and relaxation.

Motivating: Scenes featuring dynamic elements like rugged mountain ranges, challenging hiking terrain, or powerful ocean waves can inspire a sense of motivation and a call to action.

Inspiring: Grand and majestic landscapes, such as expansive canyons, towering waterfalls, or vast deserts, instill awe and inspiration, encouraging viewers to dream big.

Dreamy: Photographs with soft focus, pastel colors, and a hazy atmosphere, often depicting misty forests, foggy valleys, or sunsets over the ocean, create a dreamy, otherworldly ambiance.

Serene: Picturesque views of calm lakes, quiet forests, or gentle landscapes in soft morning or evening light project a tranquil mood, inviting viewers to find peace and quiet contemplation.

Majestic: Images showcasing imposing natural features like towering mountains, expansive glaciers, or massive cliffs elicit a feeling of awe and admiration for the grandeur of nature.

Epic: Vast landscapes, panoramic vistas, or scenes with a sense of boundless space and adventure contribute to an epic mood, stirring feelings of grandiosity and exploration.

Mysterious: Play with shadows, unique lighting, or capturing landscapes with hidden details and complex compositions can create a mysterious mood, inviting viewers to unravel the secrets within the image.

Whimsical: Creative compositions, unexpected perspectives, and scenes featuring fantastical elements, like vibrant wildflowers against a dramatic sky, impart a whimsical and playful mood.

Dramatic: Intense lighting, stormy weather, or landscapes with stark contrasts and bold colors convey a dramatic mood, eliciting strong emotions and emphasizing the raw power of nature.

Isolated/Remote: Pictures featuring vast, untouched wilderness, desolate landscapes, or solitary trees create a mood of isolation, prompting contemplation and a sense of solitude.

Surreal: Using creative editing techniques or capturing landscapes with unusual and otherworldly features, like bizarre rock formations or distorted reflections, produces a surreal mood, challenging perceptions.

Ephemeral: Photographs focused on fleeting elements such as transient light, seasonal changes, or temporary natural phenomena convey a mood of impermanence and the transient beauty of the landscape.

How do I select photos that complement my living room style?

How do I choose the right photography for my living room? Your living room is a reflection of your personal style, and the right wall art photography can enhance its overall ambiance and create a space that you love spending time in. When selecting photos for your living room, it’s important to consider the existing décor. Therefore, consider the existing room aesthetics by taking a step back and assessing the overall style of your living room. Is it contemporary, minimalist, rustic, or something else? The style of your décor will help you narrow down your choices and ensure that the photos you select complement the existing aesthetic.

Color – Pay attention to the predominant colors in your living room, such as the walls, furniture, carpets, curtains, and other décor. Choose photos that feature colors that complement or accentuate the existing color scheme.

Theme – If your living room has a particular theme, such as a beach theme, a travel theme, or a nature theme, select photos that align with that theme. For example, if you have a beach theme, you might choose photos of seascapes, sunsets, or shells.

Explore the interactive examples in the next section for practical applications.

4. Aesthetics - Wall Art Print Medium and Frame Options

The aesthetics of wall art will matter a great deal when decorating a living room. The choice of print medium and frame options can significantly impact the visual effect and overall style of the space. Selecting the right framing style can complement the artwork and enhance its presence. The choice of print quality and material, whether it’s canvas, metal, or acrylic, can influence the texture, durability, and aesthetic appeal of the artwork.

Which Wall Art Print Medium is Best for Living Room?

There are a number of wall art print mediums available (canvas, metal, acrylic, etc.) and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Choosing the best photo print medium for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. Some factors to consider include cost, durability, and the look and feel of the print. While you can read the full guide Choosing the Best Photo Print Medium, it is worth mentioning the effects that the different types of print medium finishes have, when considering wall art for your living room. Here is a quick reference:

High reflection – metal and standard acrylic
Low reflection
– non-glare acrylic
No reflection – canvas

This will be especially important if you have a window, directly opposite your artwork.

INTERACTIVE EXERCISE: The interactive example below simulates the effect of a finish, depending on its reflection quality, when there is a window directly opposite the wall art.

Framing Living Room Wall Art

Deciding whether to frame a wall art print for a living room is a subjective choice with various considerations. Framing can create a distinct separation between the artwork and the wall, enhancing its prominence and guiding viewers’ focus. A well-chosen frame adds completeness to the print, accentuating its contours and contributing to a classic fine art gallery ambiance in a room. The framed landscape print can transform the space dramatically, making a powerful statement.

However, the decision not to frame is equally valid. Some prefer the clean and minimalist look of frameless prints, finding aesthetic value in the simplicity. Additionally, those seeking a contemporary style may find that a frame clashes with their room’s existing aesthetic. Cost is another factor, as framing incurs additional expenses and may not align with a limited budget. Ultimately, the choice to have framed photos on the wall or not depends on personal preferences, stylistic considerations, and budget constraints.

PRO TIP: Read Choosing a Frame for a Landscape Print: How To – Practical Guide.

INTERACTIVE EXERCISE: Play with the interactive example below and see how you feel. Which option seems more appealing to you personally?

In addition to aesthetic appeal frames are almost a must for wall art, which is placed on the living room floor. The decision to place framed art on the floor goes beyond mere stylistic choices; it also serves a practical purpose. The frame, while enhancing the overall presentation, acts as a protective barrier for the artwork. Safeguarding the piece from potential damage, the frame becomes a functional element, preserving the integrity of the art and ensuring its longevity.

Inspiration and Ideas: What to put on a large living room wall?

Additional Tips for Living Room Wall Art

As you take the steps of transforming your living room into a curated haven with amazing wall art, this final section goes beyond the aesthetics, and explores the nuanced aspects that ensure your artistic investment stands the test of time.

Hanging

So, you’ve acquired a legendary piece of wall art, and now it’s time to showcase it in all its glory in your living room. Hanging it professionally is crucial for optimal visual impact and the key lies in the meticulous process of positioning and securing your artwork.

The first step involves finding the ideal spot on the wall, ensuring perfect horizontal and vertical alignment. Understanding the hanging system, whether it’s Cables & Rail, Direct Wall Mount, Frame Cable, or French Cleat, is another important step. Each system comes with specific instructions to calculate and mark anchor positions accurately. Considering the type of wall you are working with—be it drywall, plaster, studs, or even challenging brick is yet another consideration when hanging wall art.

Lighting Considerations

Investing in an expensive piece of wall art only to hang it in a dimly lit living room defeats the purpose. Whether it’s a painting or a photograph, the work of a dedicated artist contains intricate details, shapes, and colors, all intentionally incorporated into the image. Displaying such fine art in inadequately lit surroundings risks losing these essential elements. Conversely, with proper illumination, a wall art photo print can radiate in its full glory, showcasing the artist’s intended details. In essence, meticulous lighting has the power to breathe life into a masterpiece.

PRO TIP: This comprehensive guide aims to enlighten you on the factors to consider when lighting photo prints, providing valuable insights applicable to illuminating various types of wall art.

Care and Maintenance

Light, heat, pollution, humidity, and other factors can shorten the lifespan of your prized wall art possessions. Understanding these factors and basic tips on how to protect artwork is important for any art collector.
