Fall Colors Spectrum | Kebler Pass, Colorado
A unique capture of the Colorado fall colors displaying the full spectrum of foliage hues. This image represents a very small part of the aspen forest, yet it boasts just about any color one might view during the fall season. Although I have seen the variety of autumn colors in one scene before, never have I observed them in such a concentrated area. What a lucky encounter that was and a privilege to photograph.
Observe the fall colors spectrum starting from the top. Uniformly yellow aspen leaves cover the view, which is probably the most common autumn scenario. The yellow color is in the middle of the gamut and in most cases the predominant tone. Then, let your eyes gently follow down where we see the collision of the two extremes in the range – red and green. What a magnificent arrangement of contrast! What a charming differentiation of warm and cold leaf pigment!
The rest of the landscape is sprinkled with fall colors from the middle of the spectrum. Pastel oranges and yellowish greens. Dark oranges and bright oranges are everywhere. A good amount of brown leaves are also present. Along with some of the leafless branches they remind that autumn is well on its way of transforming the land. Part of the richness here is influenced by the fact that colorful leaves are covering not only the tree canopies, but also bushes close to the ground.
There is another characteristic that makes it possible to view this spectrum of fall colors. It is the fact that all of the flora is positioned on a steep slope. This creates a unique vantage point that opens up the terrain visually, and presents almost a top-down view of the forest. This gem could have easily been missed, but my eyes were directed towards it at a sharp turn of the trail. There is a small gorge and a river between the camera and the photo view, and I am grateful to have noticed it.
