Wildflowers abound in Crested Butte every summer. There is a reason why it is considered the Wildflower Capital of Colorado. Every summer the entire region is impressively arrayed with colors and blossoms of all kinds. One can explore the valleys and hillsides only to be surprised by the majestic wildflowers behind every corner. The breathtaking blooms appear in late June into early July and the show is always spectacular.
The image above displays an iconic wildflowers view just outside Crested Butte. Lupine (genus Lupinus) is one of my favorite flowers out in nature. They are full of life, beauty and striking colors. Nowhere else have seen these charming plants as tall as in this mountain area. Growing to upwards of 2 feet tall they adorn the landscape like few others. It is hard to describe with words what it is like to stand in the middle of a field which is entirely decorated with these amazing plants.
I especially love how in this picture the wildflowers are surrounded by Corn Lilies, also common to Crested Butte. The gentle green leaves compliment the violet flowers so well, it looks like a giant wildflower carpet. Look closely to the far end of the field and notice that this magic blanket stretches for several hundred feet. It is a remarkable sight to see and a dream landscape for the fine art nature photographer.
When I captured this scenery it was a peaceful summer evening. There was no wind and everything was still. I wanted a photo that portrayed the beautiful Crested Butte landscape with wildflowers both in the foreground and in the background. This way the viewer could see the lovely flowers from a close distance, but also see the vastness of their cover. The famous Gothic Mountain added the perfect balance to the gorgeous view.
