Flower and Fern | Kebler Pass, Colorado
The Fern Flower is not a real flower. It is something from Slavic mythology, Baltic mythology, and Estonian mythology. The myth claims that this magical flower blooms on the eve of the summer solstice for a brief period. It also says that whoever finds it while blooming, will be blessed with fortune, luck, wealth, etc. On the other hand ferns actually do not produce flowers or blooms. They are vascular plants, which reproduce through spores. Ferns do not have seeds or flowers.
On a drive through Kebler pass I stopped to walk through the magical aspen forest, as I usually do. The fern plants were green and lush, and I could see a flower here and there, popping through the prolific vegetation. This created a charming forest floor, carpeted with beautiful dense foliage. It almost reminded me of something that one would expect from a fairy tale movie set, except it was all natural. Being intrigued, I decided to find a photogenic spot and capture it.
My goal was an up-close and personal portrait of a gentle white flower, nestled among the fern leaves. After some exploring I came upon a humble individual blossom. This delicate beauty sat quietly surrounded by the dark green background of the everpresent ferns. It looked like a precious pearl guarded by the jagged megaphylls, which is the name of fern leaves.
The photographic challenge in this image was to get both flower and fern leaves in sharp focus. I had to zoom in with my lens to get this close to the plants. This creates a shallow depth of field, which ultimately causes a blurry background. However, I did not want anything to be blurry. For this reason, I took multiple shots, focusing on different parts of the image and then composed them together in post processing.
