Vibrant Sunrise | Front Range, Colorado
Having traveled in several countries around the world and having grown up in Europe, I would say that I have never seen sunrise colors as spectacular as in Colorado. I am not sure what it is about the weather conditions here, but especially in the Colorado Front Range both sunrise and sunset can be strikingly dramatic.
On the morning that I captured this landscape my day began without any plans for taking pictures. After years of experience, I have learned to tell if a Colorado sunrise will be good, long before the sun rises. As I woke up and looked outside, I could tell that there would be dramatic color that morning. Quite quickly I got my camera and went out in hope of finding a photogenic location in time.
The main difficulty was that I only had minutes before the sunrise colors would reach their peak. Therefore, my anxiety level rose as I kept driving and calculating my options in my head. I remembered a large cottonwood tree I had seen in the past. The Colorado Front Range mountains were in its background and I decided to attempt reaching it before the sunrise was in full swing. I finally parked the car and ran as fast as I could, hauling my camera and tripod. Several hundred yards had to be covered through a field in order to reach the tree. I feared missing this enormous opportunity, because by now the sky had exploded with vibrant colors.
Finally I arrived and set up my camera so quickly that I forgot to even check my lens focus. I just kept shooting before these magnificent sunrise colors and Colorado Front Range morning light disappeared. Later I found out that my lens had been focused correctly and that my image was perfectly sharp. I was so grateful for that and also for managing to capture this incredibly beautiful moment. As nerve-racking as it had been, I was extremely pleased with the final result. It is no wonder that this image has become one of my best sellers.
