Human built cathedrals are always majestic and awe-inspiring. The one you see above has naturally occurred in Antelope slot canyon near Page, Arizona. I find this water-caved chamber as inspiring (if not more) as something created by people. The gentle shapes of the sandstone, the ever changing colors, and the mellow light with a variety of hues, are truly captivating. All of this beauty draws landscape nature photographers year after year, who aspire to capture a masterpiece.
One reason why abstract fine art can be so beautiful here, is the blend of gentle shapes and light offered by this Arizona slot canyon. These marvelous sandstone walls have been carved and shaped over time. Sandstone is naturally a very porous rock which allows strong water flow, such as a flash flood, to sculpt it. The final result usually ends up being dazzling stone walls with smooth lines and textures resembling waves. I believe that the water’s work truly creates striking magic out of sandstone.
These gorgeous textures and shapes are tremendously enhanced by the tender light coming from above. There are several reasons for that. First, even on a sunny Arizona day, little light penetrates the slot canyon’s ceiling openings. This causes a gentle illumination of the canyon walls, which is a big advantage when taking a picture. Second, slot canyons are usually deep and there is less light on the bottom, than towards the ceiling. This creates a gradient casting of light which causes the sandstone walls to appear in different color hues. Third, because of the constant changing of wall shapes natural contrasts occur, creating everlasting beauty.
