Antelope Canyon is one of the most mesmerizing places you will ever take a walk into. On the outside it is just a normal Arizona desert area with gentle hills. But then you enter into the mouth of Antelope Canyon and all of a sudden it is an underground kingdom of beauty. While the weather outside may present blue skies and bright sunlight, the inside of the Canyon is dimly lit. It may be hot on the outside, but the inside temperature is always about 10-15 degrees cooler.
Antelope Canyon is so beautiful and surreal at the same time. Part of the shock is the complete drastic change, walking into it. The feeling I experienced was as if strolling through an ancient temple. Magnificent shapes and colors were present everywhere I looked inside this stunning canyon. I wanted to just stay there and photograph all of the shapes and textures.
I observed the walls from all angles. One of the charming aspects of Antelope Canyon was that the shapes kept shifting as my viewing angle changed. The center shape of the image, resembles the form of a heart. However, as I moved a few steps in any direction the formations shifted and new impressive views were discovered.
Slot canyons are formed by rushing waters, which cut through sandstone and limestone. They are usually not wide, and can be quite deep compared to their width. Slot canyons are usually found in the desert, where rivers do not exist and water is lacking. Therefore, most commonly they are formed through multiple flash floods, which can occur during the Monsoon season in the desert. The sandstone in Antelope Canyon contains amounts of hematite, limonite, and goethite which produces red and yellow colors in the canyon walls.
