The Grand Canyon in all its majesty, reveals the Earth’s layers underneath. The vastness, the beauty, and the complexity of this landscape helps a person really understand why it is called “Grand”. It is a photographer’s dream. On the other hand, it is challenging to demonstrate its sheer magnitude in a fine art print.
I captured this image on my very first visit to the Grand Canyon. Yes, I had seen many pictures and videos of it. However, its colossal size is hard to imagine unless one stands on the edge and consumes this natural wonder with one’s own eyes.
I wanted to portray not only the splendor and beauty of the Grand Canyon, but also its immensity. I walked for over two hours along the South Rim in search of the perfect view. I wanted to fit it all in one panoramic picture. However, as I kept moving new angles and views opened up. I experienced a mix of emotions. On one hand I was amazed by the breathtaking views and endless opportunities. On the other hand I was getting a little overwhelmed with making the right choice. I wanted to photograph at sunset and knew that my spot had to be picked well in advance. Otherwise, I risked missing an epic moment altogether.
After lots of fast scouting and evaluation I finally settled on the location and angle I wanted to shoot from. There were nice clouds above the horizon, which I desired, but now it was a race against time. The sun had already begun its descent and soon it would cast its warm colors into the sky above the Grand Canyon. I was a bit nervous as I hustled to set up my camera. The sunset light and colors did not disappoint. Pinks and reds gently painted the entire view and the Grand Canyon looked magic.
