Fall aspen leaves can truly appear magical. In this fine art photograph I wanted to portray their beauty from a very close distance, in panoramic format. This intimate scene exhibits at least fifteen different colors and tones gathered on a tiny stretch of land, about 20 inches long. Both cold and warm colors create this rich mosaic of autumn foliage.
In the fall aspen leaves change their colors but not all at the same time. Some go early and others go late. The majority of those stages are represented here. Some of the leaves are past their peak fall color and have already turned brown. Others are in the transition from peak vibrance to turning brown. A number of them are at peak yellow color, providing a brightness to this natural forest carpet. Yet others look like trying to transition from green to a fall yellow.
The variety of fall aspen leaves is very noticeable here. Notice the middle left leaf. What unique pigmentation with two types of green, some yellow, and striking bands of purple, separating the two greens. Observe a similar decoration in the middle but with different patterns and color shades. Then move your eyes to the upper right and enjoy the charm of a decaying leaf colored with a purple hue. Look closer still and notice the pretty spot on its bottom right, looking like a lake in a desert from the air.
Although the majority of fall leaves are from aspen trees a few grass and small plant leaves are also seen. However, the star of those is the red leaf of a Wild Geranium (Geranium viscosissimum and Geranium caespitosum). It stands out among all by providing a nice warm contrast with its luminous red, making the foliage collage complete. This micro-landscape is so beautiful and intriguing, yet it can be easily missed simply by not paying attention.
