A magical sunset over the fjords and mountains of Norway. The sun barely peeks over the jagged mountain peaks, casting the last rays of the day over this beautiful landscape. The unique combination of steep mountain sides, huge fjords, and sea water at sunset create the magic of the North here. Few places on earth boast these elements put together and Norway is one of them.
I got to spend 2 hours on top of a mountain and had this whole view and sunset to myself. Given that it was the end of July, the image was taken after 11pm. It was an absolutely special experience for me, as I got to watch the sun slowly descend at a low angle and finally disappear below the horizon.
Some real magic happened that evening, which I had never in my life seen before. The window between sunset and sunrise was supposed to be about 2.5 hours. However, only about 30 minutes after the sun had fully submerged below the horizon, it started to rise again. I could see just the tip of it rise above the water for only about 3-4 minutes and then it disappeared again. Five minutes later, the same thing happened. It was the most amazing nature spectacle I had ever witnessed in my life.
Later I tried doing some research to understand if this strange sunset phenomenon, I saw above the fjords that night, was something known. However, the only thing I found was about light refraction during which the sunlight is bent over the earth’s curve. I am still puzzled though as to why the sun crested the horizon twice, way before it was scheduled to fully rise again. It is what I called the nordland magic.
