Winter Sunset | Fletcher Mountain, Colorado
Fletcher Mountain is surrounded by impressive jagged peaks, forming an amazing Colorado mountain panorama. It is the highest Thirteener in the Tenmile Range of the North American Rocky Mountains. Located just southwest of Breckenridge Fletcher is also west of the famous Quandary Peak. The peak rises to 13,951’ making it just shy of a Fourteener mountain. Nevertheless, it is one of Colorado’s highest hundred peaks and is also Colorado’s 59th highest peak.
Living in Colorado I had seen Fletcher Mountain multiple times, before taking this image, and had always been impressed with it. One winter evening I hiked to this location just before dark to take a closer look and assess the possibility of a panoramic fine art image. It was already late in the day and the sunlight was gone, but I was able to visualize what it would look like when the setting sun painted it with warm hues. There was no question that it was a great candidate.
Therefore, I decided to return on another day and capture Fletcher mountain during a Colorado winter sunset. I knew that in January the setting sun hit Fletcher just at the right angle, because I had seen it. I also knew that the deep saturated light made this mountain alive right before the sun dropped below the horizon.
When I returned a few weeks later I knew exactly what I was looking for. I knew the time of the sunset in Colorado and I also knew how I was going to frame Fletcher Mountain in my image. My spot was already picked out, so I set up the camera and began waiting for the perfect moment. It wasn’t long before it all happened. The last rays of the sun were so intense, that they completely transformed the illuminated snow, giving it a “burning” visual effect. The beauty of this mountain panorama was just astounding. And just like that, it was all gone in minutes. Devoid of color the entire scene looked almost black and white.
