Rocky Mountain Sunrise | Snow Mountain Ranch, Colorado
On a cold December morning I woke up early and got out while it was still dark. Whenever I do that, I make it a point to look out the horizon east of me. I look in order to get an idea of what the sunrise may bring. Having been in the field of fine art nature photography for many years has taught me to read the signs of light. I can tell if a sunrise will produce strong colors, and this Rocky Mountain dawn was quite telling. Therefore, I proceeded through the snowy terrain in search of the perfect panoramic view.
Once I was settled the wait began in twilight. The morning was silent and peaceful. There were clouds above the Rocky Mountains and I could not wait to see what colors the sunrise would soon splash all over them.
It was not very long before the day began with a Burning Daylight. The first warm colors glided across the bottom of the clouds. The light continued to intensify its colors and brightness, as it unfolded an amazing spectacle before my eyes. The sunrise revealed the raging winds on the rocky mountain peaks, while the valley below quietly lay covered with a placid fog blanket. I shot quickly, trying to seize this live art, before it would disappear. The final result turned into a beautiful panoramic sunrise image.
Look closely in the left side of the image and notice the mountain ridge appearing to have fire flames shooting upwards. This is the snow being kicked up into the air from the high winds, while being illuminated by the early morning sunlight. What a spectacular show of light and snow! I cannot imagine the experience to have been close to those frozen flames of light and photographing them. Perhaps it would have been quite challenging, but I can also imagine it producing a stunning masterpiece. Nevertheless, I was grateful for having witnessed and captured a stunning Rocky Mountain winter sunrise, even from afar.
