A solitary tree photo was not at all what I expected to capture on that day. It was a full moon and I wanted to photograph the moonrise above a clean field horizon. However, to do that I needed a large piece of land, without houses, buildings, power-lines, oil rigs or any other objects. My goal was to capture the first image of what I hoped to become my new “Simplicity” collection. Just horizon, sky, and moon.
While a solitary tree was in my future “Simplicity” image plans, on that late afternoon I was in pursuit of the full moon. Leaving an hour before the moonrise I thought I had plenty of time to drive out of civilization and find the perfect spot I prayed for. As I kept driving my discouragement grew. A house here, a farm there seemed to never end and time was quickly running out. Sad and disappointed I began to realize that I would have to wait another month for the next lunar phase. After more frantic driving, I finally gave up and headed back.
My gps took me through a different route. Just as I was having a pity party I glimpsed the silhouette of a magnificent solitary tree in the twilight. I felt the grace of God in that moment as I pulled out the camera and captured this unexpected beauty. After all, my efforts were not wasted. Although I had not gotten the shot I pursued, I got a different one which had been in my future plans. I had envisioned a future shot of a solitary tree, with a plain horizon and sky. That evening I encountered that vision.
The story does not end here. The next morning I woke up early and realized that the moon was still full and would soon be setting. I also remembered that the day before I had driven by a west-facing plain field. That field would not have worked the night before because the moon rose on the east. However, now it would be setting above the west horizon and this could work. I quickly grabbed the camera and drove out into the dark. That morning I was blessed with the photo I pursued the evening before – The Loveliest Landscape. Not only I felt that my prayer had been answered, but also felt that I received more than I asked – 2 images instead of one.
