The majestic Wilson Peak stands tall on a calm winter morning. Even late in the season the mountain landscape is well covered with a thick blanket of snow. Evergreen and aspen forests stretch for miles in this expansive and beautiful scenery. It is cold, but nothing moves in the still air, as the sun is slowly warming the day. This is a classic Colorado black and white mountain artwork, representing the charm of the high country during the cold season.
I love how the winter snow covers the north face of Wilson Peak, while revealing its magnificent rock features. The steep walls are decorated with intimidating cliffs, which cannot but evoke a sense of awe. The thick forest layer below brings a sense of inviting calm. It is a contrast of shelter in comparison to that of an exposed, massive, and cold mountain. Finally, the open fields of glistening snow bring additional feelings of tranquility. This is enhanced by the friendly aspen trees clustered here and there, as they patiently await the return of spring and warm weather.
On this winter morning I struggled to find the right spot to photograph Wilson Peak. It is such a photogenic and stunning mountain which, combined with the terrain around, offers endless fine art nature photography possibilities. I chose this spot because it clearly communicates the enormous size of the fourteener, while revealing its beauty and that of the surrounding backcountry. Although ranchers live on this land, I did not see another soul. I was blessed with an intimate opportunity to experience this countryside in a way I had not before.
