Winter Park Sunrise | Berthoud Pass, Colorado
An intense and spectacular sunrise above Winter Park, Colorado creates dramatic light near Berthoud Pass. Winter sunrises in the mountains can be rather breathtaking. This is due to the fact that during the warmer months the movement of air is more sluggish, resulting in smog and haze. Therefore, the air particles caused by smog and haze reduce the amount of intense colors reaching the earth during sunrise.
After a heavy snowstorm over the Winter Park mountains I decided to get up early and go out for a sunrise picture outing. As I was cleaning about a foot of fresh snow off of my vehicle I looked east and saw the faint pink light. The horizon had a band of high clouds, reflecting a dim hint of the distant sunrise. Immediately two things became clear to me. One, that the morning light would be quite dramatic. Two, that if I wanted any chance of capturing the sunrise with my camera, I needed to gain high elevation quickly.
My only choice was to drive up towards Berthoud Pass in hopes of finding a great view on time. This was a classic example of an adrenaline rushed nature photography experience. I drove as fast and as safely as I could on the snowy road, to soon position myself just in time. Minutes later the sunrise poured such intense light, that all the mountains around Winter Park, and the Fraser Valley, were illuminated with deep and colorful light.
Moments of such profound beauty happen in nature regularly. However, few are those who go out and witness them. For me it was an intensely exhilarating experience. Although this type of exceptional views are very short lived, sacrificing on sleep and the warm comfort of your bed is entirely worth it in my mind. By the time I was finished my fingers were in pain from the intense cold. Nevertheless, my spirit was full as I had just been gifted with a breathtaking sunrise.
