On a late Fall season morning I witnessed unparalleled and rare beauty in Glenwood Springs. Pastel colors all over these hills gently mixing with the fresh snow. What strikes the viewer in this panorama is the richness of vivid yellows and oranges. However, look closely and notice all the maroon sandstone cliffs, predominantly in the upper half of the image. Then observe the tiny patches of evergreen trees in the middle. Note the slim stems of burned trees as your eyes move up the slope. Finally, regard how gradually the fresh snow emerges from the bottom up. To me this is the most spectacular part of this artwork – the fact that it exhibits two seasons gently blended together in charming harmony.
Most times I intentionally travel to a destination with the goal of nature photography. However, sometimes I will stumble upon a scenery and end up with a landscape image that I never planned. This was exactly my experience in Glenwood Springs on that remarkable Fall season day.
I was actually on my way back from a trip to Aspen. The impressive Fall colors were “raging” in the region. Overnight fresh snow had covered the higher altitudes and made the terrain look unreal. My camera was already packed. However, when I saw the Fall color hills of Glenwood Springs, masterfully blended with the fresh snow, I could not resist. I was moved by the exceptional splendor and unpacked my camera.
Glenwood springs is strategically positioned at the junction where the Roaring Fork River merges with the Colorado River. The area boasts a lot of geothermal activity primarily in the form of hot springs. The town is also located just west of the Glenwood Canyon – another landscape marvel. The canyon is full of gorgeous views of tall cliffs and the Colorado River.
