Capitol Peak Sunset | Elk Mountains, Colorado
Catching Capitol Peak on this beautiful autumn sunset was like discovering a hidden gem. The area is a bit challenging to get to, especially when it has been rainy. You drive through alluring aspen forests on a slippery dirt road. Then you have to hike for some time before the entire valley view opens up and reveals the splendor of natureโs artwork. Capitol Peak in all its glory, positioned perfectly well to catch and reflect the last light of the sunset. One look and you know this mountain is massive and strikingly scenic. I had seen pictures of Capitol Peak before. However, I had never seen it in real life prior to capturing the image you see above.
On this day, I arrived well before the sunset was going to illuminate the face of Capitol Peak. Immediately I was impressed by the grandeur of the mountain and surrounding natural scenery. Aspen trees were all over the valley, and my vantage point was high enough to allow a vast view. Fresh snow covered the majority of the highlands, gently blending with the Colorado fall color aspen trees.
The framing of this image was somewhat challenging. Part of me wanted to really zoom in and focus on Capitol Peak and the sunset alone. On the other hand, I was mesmerized by the wide valley, the fall colors of the aspen trees, the evergreen trees, the snow, and more mountains. Ultimately I decided to go for the big picture and open up the entire panoramic landscape in my final version. It gives the viewer a taste of the vastness and charm of the mountain valley and the surrounding peaks.
Capitol Peak is part of the Elk Mountains and is named for its similarity in shape to that of the United States Capitol Building in Washington D.C. It is the 32nd highest mountain and also one of the most difficult fourteeners to climb in Colorado. Capitol Peak is a very arduous climb and even the only non-technical route has a tremendously challenging section to cross, called the Knife Edge. The Knife Edge is a rather sharp and exposed mountain ridge about 150 feet long, and has taken several lives. Therefore, I will stick to my photography and conquer this fearsome monolith with my camera.
This is the absolute highest luxury, museum quality product in fine art printmaking on the market today. Acrylic prints boast a tremendous range of vivid and bright colors, incredible sharpness and clarity, and an anti-reflective acrylic surface. Put together, these qualities result in an almost 3D looking showpiece, which immediately captivates and impresses the viewer. TruLifeยฎ acrylic prints are a fully finished wall art product, ready to be hung on your wall.
Lumachrome acrylic fine art prints reflect light with amazing luminescence due to the Iridium metal particles used in the print inks. Because of this, these museum quality prints appear as if they are lit from behind. In addition, the colors are amazingly vibrant and well saturated, while the dark areas maintain great detail. Furthermore, I use the anti-reflection, scratch resistant, and UV protective TruLifeยฎ acrylic as a standard on my limited edition prints.
Metal prints are a paperless fine art photographic product. The inks are directly infused and sealed onto an aluminum sheet, in order to produce this gallery quality, luxury artwork. ChromaLuxe metal prints result in a stunning, high-gloss fine art image, with bright and saturated colors. Metal prints have incredible image quality, archival properties, and physical durability.
Research has shown that ChromaLuxe metal prints will outlast, by three times, silver-halide photographic paper prints. Besides, metal prints are a remarkable high definition product, delivering high quality at a slightly lower price, compared to acrylic prints.
Large format print sizes with great quality are available for your interior. As a landscape nature photographer, I pride myself on being able to produce huge prints with sharpness and detail.
