Wildflowers | Elk Mountains, Colorado
An amazing high altitude garden in the Elk Mountains, formed by wildflowers and young evergreens, full of life awaiting to greet a brand new day.
One summer morning I was hiking in the Elk Mountains looking to photograph wildflowers. It was a quiet tranquil morning full green as far as the eye could see. This part of the state always seems more lush to me than other parts of the Colorado Rockies. Green grass and plants cover the mountain sides way above the tree line. In addition, the pines just seem taller, greener, and more beautiful in my eyes. I love spending time, whether with my camera or just out in nature.
As I was hiking in the Elk Mountains before sunrise I suddenly came across this magical garden of wildflowers. It was hidden, such that one could not see it right up until a few feet away. This location was on the higher end of altitude for flowers. Therefore, they were smaller in size. Nonetheless, they were still quite lovely.
What made this landscape really beautiful for me was the combination of three types of wildflowers along with the lush evergreens of the Elk Mountains. The majority of the violet colored flowers are Lupines. In the bottom left you can see a few blooms of the Colorado Columbine (Aquilegia caerulea). Finally, the remaining orange blossoms are Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja integra).
