Charming stone church at the base of a mountain on a winter night under stars

Saint Malo Church | Allenspark, Colorado
The St Malo Church is better known as The Chapel on the Rock, but its official name is Saint Catherine of Siena Chapel. It is located near Allenspark, Colorado and sits at an altitude of 8500 feet, right at the foot of Mt Meeker. Joseph Bosetti is known for having conceived the notion of building a chapel on this huge rock formation. He was inspired by the words of Jesus, when he said to Peter “Upon this rock I shall build my Church” (Matt 16:18).

Bosetti had to wait almost 20 years however, before the St Malo Church was finally built in 1935. The land was originally owned by William McPhee, who donated it to Bosetti in 1920. Nevertheless, there were no funds to build this Chapel on the Rock. Therefore, the wait continued and it was not until 1935 when Oscar and Edith Malo donated the funds for the church building. Soon after the chapel was built it was dedicated to Saint Catherine of Siena in memory of Mrs. Malo’s mother, Catherine.

It took me a full year of planning and waiting for the right weather conditions, before I was able to take this picture of the St Malo Church. In my mind I imagined a winter scene with fresh snow and a sky full of stars. In order to accomplish this night photography shot I needed to be there right after a snow storm and when the sky was clear. This kind of timing can be quite tricky.

After a long wait the day came. A snow storm passed through and the forecast predicted clear skies. I left my house around 4am as I needed to arrive by St Malo Church while darkness was in full swing. This was necessary so that I could capture the stars. The temperature was 16F and the image had to be composed in complete darkness, using only a flashlight to guide me. I then took a second shot very early at dawn to capture the church, the trees. and the mountains. In post processing the final artwork was produced by blending the 2 images.

FINE ART PRINTS FOR SALE

Print Mediums

Acrylic - TruLife® LumaChrome Prints - ready to hang

This is the absolute highest luxury, museum quality product in fine art printmaking on the market today. Acrylic prints boast a tremendous range of vivid and bright colors, incredible sharpness and clarity, and an anti-reflective acrylic surface. Put together, these qualities result in an almost 3D looking showpiece, which immediately captivates and impresses the viewer. TruLife® acrylic prints are a fully finished wall art product, ready to be hung on your wall.

Lumachrome acrylic fine art prints reflect light with amazing luminescence due to the Iridium metal particles used in the print inks. Because of this, these museum quality prints appear as if they are lit from behind. In addition, the colors are amazingly vibrant and well saturated, while the dark areas maintain great detail. Furthermore, I use the anti-reflection, scratch resistant, and UV protective TruLife® acrylic as a standard on my limited edition prints.

Metal - ChromaLuxe Prints - ready to hang

Metal prints are a paperless fine art photographic product. The inks are directly infused and sealed onto an aluminum sheet, in order to produce this gallery quality, luxury artwork. ChromaLuxe metal prints result in a stunning, high-gloss fine art image, with bright and saturated colors. Metal prints have incredible image quality, archival properties, and physical durability.

Research has shown that ChromaLuxe metal prints will outlast, by three times, silver-halide photographic paper prints. Besides, metal prints are a remarkable high definition product, delivering high quality at a slightly lower price, compared to acrylic prints.
