Fewer trees (if any) are more enchanting and majestic than the ones in Redwood National Park. These forests are so magnificent and unreal that they gave me a feeling of almost being in a movie set. When I hiked there I almost forgot that one of my main purposes for visiting was fine art nature photography. Everything was so intriguing, so new. I kept stopping and looking around every few feet, carefully examining every massive tree, shrub, or fern. It was a dreamlike experience that left me speechless.
Walking on a path through Redwood National Park among these magnificent behemoths, one can hardly tell what time of the day it is. They are so tall, so big, so breathtaking! Their canopy is like a tall roof, preventing the sunlight from hitting the forest floor. For example, can you tell that the image above was taken in broad daylight with clear skies? The other part which made the experience so surreal for me was that there was no wind, no air movement. It felt as if I was in an enormous room indoors. So wonderful, yet so mysterious!
Capturing these massive Redwood National Park giants is no easy task however. I always want to convey the full experience in my artwork. However the redwoods forests are both wide and tall and that presents a major challenge. One has to sacrifice either vertical or horizontal nature scenery. Otherwise a little bit of both has to be sacrificed. In this case I sacrificed the vertical view, in order to represent the panoramic feel of the forest.
Redwood National and State Parks of Northern California are truly a natural and precious jewel. The coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) trees are the tallest in the world and among the oldest as well. They reach heights of up to 379 feet (115.5 m) and their diameter (at breast height) can reach up to 29.2 feet (8.9 m). The redwood trees can also live for 2000 years. It is a sad fact that almost 90% of them were eliminated before these baffling forests became protected. However, I am glad that at least some of them were preserved.
