Oh, the magic of the Colorado fall season! I have never seen anything like it. It is truly a remarkable experience. The weather is usually warm, but the air is crisp. The skies are blue and pretty with plenty of Cirrus clouds. The scent in the air is full of foliage aroma and late season grass smells. And the views… they are the best thing! Golden color aspen leaves everywhere. It captivates the spirit as nature is undoubtedly transforming in preparation for winter.
It is a rare site to see all of the aspen leaves, in the same patch of trees, being at peak color and at a uniform tone. Notice how there are no reds, oranges, or greens. What was even more amazing, when I took this image, was that the leaves were everywhere. They were both on the trees and on the ground and there was no shortage of them. The leaves created a golden carpet, covering everything and making a statement that fall was in full swing in Colorado.
One interesting fact about this image is that it was entirely unplanned. I was slowly driving around the Colorado Wilson Mesa, enjoying the fall colors behind every turn, and scouting for opportunities. Just as I was rounding a turn on this marvelous country road I decided to stop. When I got out of my car and stood in the middle of the road, it was perfectly clear. This breathtaking view had to be captured.
I believe the aspen is quite a fascinating tree and am grateful that Colorado is full of aspens which make such a difference during the fall. Quaking aspen leaves make a gentle rustling sound with the slightest of breezes. Combined with their golden color during the fall season they make quite a spectacle in the Colorado mountains. The combination of day and night time temperatures, mixed with moisture levels determines the colors and their timing every season. However, an interesting fact about aspen leaves is that their true color is not green, as we observe during the spring and summer. Their true colors are what we see during the fall, which in Colorado is mostly golden yellow. Chlorophyll is the reason why the leaves appear green before the fall season, which temporarily masks the real leaf color.
