Fall Colors on Wilson Mesa | Telluride, Colorado
The Wilson Mesa is a wonderful ranch country in front of Wilson Peak, Colorado. Rolling hills arrayed with aspens and evergreen trees present beautiful views throughout this spectacular countryside. The fall colors abound in late September and early October as Wilson Mesa explodes in gold, orange, and red leaves. Whenever I visit this charming part of the Colorado mountains I feel as if life goes at a different (slower) pace here.
On this trip I had decided to dedicate more time in the attractive Wilson Mesa. My goal was to take my time and really explore Wilson Mesa in search of the most photogenic fall color views. The hilly scenery, seen in this image, was definitely one of the winners. It was bursting not only with aspen fall colors, but also with dark red colors from the shrubs which carpeted the hillside.
The challenge in capturing this landscape had to do a lot with framing it correctly. Frankly I struggled both in the field and later in post processing. Wilson Mesa is quite vast and there were fall colors all over the place. This presented a compositional difficulty for me, since there was too much natural beauty to fit even into a panoramic picture. Yes, saying this is a bit awkward but it was true.
Therefore, I decided to capture a wider picture, than my already panoramic format, and later crop it appropriately. This is where my second struggle became. Sitting in front of my computer it was hard to decide which part to leave out in order to crop properly. My final decision rendered the image you see above. I am quite happy with the colors and the symmetry. If you look closely you will see a subtle natural “S” formation, right through the middle of it.
