The Veil

Look closely. Do you see it? It is a big veil carved into the sandstone, as often seen in slot canyons. Swirling all over the walls, it looks as if the person wearing it is dancing, showing its full majesty. I love how the light happens to highlight these beautiful and gentle shapes, framed by the darker walls of the slot canyon.
Take for example a sculptor working on a sculpture. He uses a hard steel chisel to slowly chip away the stone and gradually form it into something beautiful. It is hard work and it takes a long time. Now juxtapose that process with carving sandstone with water. Water is so much softer, compared to a sharp steel chisel. How much longer it must take to form the walls of a beautiful slot canyon.
Although we will never know how long it took to sculpt the veil in this image, I am glad it is there. I cherish the beauty we see in nature. It is a privilege to have seen the beautiful Antelope slot canyon and to have captured it with my camera. I feel blessed when I get to see places and moments of, what I call, “live art”. I am fascinated that it changes all the time. This picture would have had a completely different look, had I taken it just 30 minutes later.
Slot canyons are magnificent underground galleries of nature fine art. They remain dry for most of the year, except for late summer. During those months flash floods are common. They are produced by heavy storms, usually miles away from the canyon itself. Water collects and follows natural drainages. By the time it reaches a slot canon large volumes of water are moving forcefully. In the process they carve the sandstone walls. This process repeats year after year, continuing to deepen and to form spectacular walls, chambers, and shapes. These canyons can be tremendously captivating.
