Alpine Flowers | Elk Mountains, Colorado
Colorado offers a tremendous variety of beautiful flowers throughout the state but this image showcases some of the blossoms in the subalpine and alpine terrain. These wildflowers are generally much smaller than their counterparts which grow at lower elevations. The reason for this is the harsher conditions at high altitude and shorter summer season high in the mountains.
The alpine flowers in Colorado also tend to bloom later in the summer in comparison to flowers which live at lower altitude. It is not uncommon for the flowers in the valleys below the tall peaks to have disappeared, while wildflowers above treeline continue to adorn the mountain sides. Although they are truly charming these high altitude plants, and their habitat, are very fragile. For this reason one must enjoy them while being respectful of the environment. These delicate wildflowers should not be picked nor trampled upon. This can easily damage the terrain and ultimately the beauty will be lost.
During a beautiful Colorado morning I was on a fine art nature photography walk in the alpine terrain near the Crested Butte mountains. I was purposefully looking for flowers. The captivating patch you see in the image was a marvelous find, which I was delighted to capture. It was a great surprise to find this small flower oasis, as I was exploring high in the Elk Mountains. The lushness of this area in the summer time is rather unique to this part of the state.
The violet flowers in the foreground are Lupins and in the alpine region they are much smaller than the Lupins in the Colorado valleys. The gentle, yellow flowers you see a bit further and to the left are Western Yellow Paintbrush (Castilleja occidentalis). Their glow makes them appear like little candles in front of a wonderful green background.
