A grand view of the valley fall colors reveals just how special this place is, with the stunning back-drop of Mt Sneffels. Grandeur is defined as “a quality of great beauty and size which attracts admiration”. Another dictionary definition defines it as “the quality of being very large and special or beautiful”. This one word in the English language packs quite a meaning as seen by these definitions. When I think of them and the charm represented in this image, I believe the definitions are spot on. The valley fall colors and the majestic mountains evoke the feelings described by the dictionary definition. Over the years of practicing fine art nature photography I have noticed an interesting phenomenon. We often think that in order to see a big mountain, such as Mount Sneffels as seen here, we have to go right next to it. My experience tells me that it is quite the opposite. In order to see the sheer size of a mountain, or a mountain range, we need to pull back. Only then the entire panorama opens up and we can see the splendid peaks in respect to their surroundings.
In addition, looking up at mountains from a low vantage point ends up hiding their real height. On the other hand, if a person can climb and gain elevation, he/she will end up with a rewarding view. When our vantage point is high, we can see the vertical size of the mountains much better. Therefore, the combination of pulling back and rising up allows the viewer to experience the mountain vista in a very unique way.
This is exactly what I have captured here. I climbed on a hill at the far end of the valley and the entire scenery enlarged. I could see all the valley fall colors, as well as the beautiful large mountains. It is no surprise that this place draws many folks with cameras. The feeling of looking at a nature scenery of this quality and magnificence is hard to describe with words!
