Church of St. John in Ranui | Villnöss, Italy
For a long time I had dreamed of photographing the Church of St. John in Ranui. This small baroque chapel is a gem in the heart of the Italian Dolomite mountains. I have honestly not seen a prettier setting where a church could be built. The valley is incredibly beautiful and is carpeted by neatly cut lush grass, speckled by delicate flowers. The evergreen trees are tall and straight, adding character to the landscape. The strongest statement of the scenery however, are the jagged but magnificent Geisler peaks of the Odle Group.
The Church of St. John in Ranui was built in 1744. It was dedicated to St. John of Nepomuk (or St. Johann, or San Giovanni). The chapel is owned by the Ranui Hof (Ranuihof) farm and sits just outside the charming town of Santa Magdalena (St. Maddalena), Italy. This is a gorgeous region of small mountain villages, which at some point used to be part of Austria. The comune is called Val di Funes (Villnöss or Villnöß) and is located in South Tyrol.
My trip to the Church of St. John in Ranui was very short. Unfortunately for the majority of my visit the weather was overcast and rainy. I barely got a glimpse of the beautiful Dolomites and was not able to get the panoramic image I really wanted. However, I was blessed one morning when the sun shone through the clouds and illuminated the beautiful chapel and its setting. What a magical moment that was! I am thankful for being able to walk away with this gorgeous image. It truly represents the spectacular and peaceful feel of the landscape.
