Manarola, Cinque Terre is a charming Italian village on the edge of the Ligurian Sea. Brightly painted multicolor houses decorate the steep shores creating a picturesque view. Away from the hustle and bustle of the big city it represents a calm setting from another era. It is a perfect place to enjoy a summer evening and listen to the gently crashing waves below.
Manarola is an amazing settlement built, as what appears, dangerously close to the vertical Cinque Terre cliff walls. On one hand it seems frightening and on the other, very peaceful. The quaint home structures are huddled together, forming a labyrinth of narrow passageways. As one wanders through it is hard to really call them streets. Some of them are so narrow that a tall person’s spanned arms can reach from wall to wall.
Some consider Manarola to be the oldest village in Cinque Terre. A historic landmark is the San Lorenzo Church, which was built in 1338. If you look straight in the middle of the image, you will notice some ancient rock walls below the houses. These are the remnants of The Bastion of Manarola, an old castle possibly dating back to the XIII century.
Manarola is the second smallest of the five villages located in Cinque Terre. It is part of the Cinque Terre National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The entire scene is so unusual yet so beautiful, that it causes the viewer to pause and marvel. It is a landscape that you don’t normally see. What a terrific blend of human architecture and the beauty of nature.
