Standing by a river in the Rocky Mountains can be quite a refreshing experience. The smell of pine trees, the cool air from the water, and the sound of a flowing river is wonderful to the senses. It is calming and soothing and most often has a relaxing effect on a person.
Capturing a Rocky Mountain river, or any flowing water, can be very enjoyable, because the fine art photographer can play with the shutter speeds. Meaning, when the camera lens is open for a longer period of time, it creates a smooth and silky looking water on the final image. This is an effect that many professional photographers use, but it only works in low light. Otherwise the photo will become overexposed and ultimately ruined.
I took this panoramic river image in the Wild Basin area of Rocky Mountain National Park. It was at the very end of a hike and was completely unexpected. After years of creating mountain artwork, it still amazes me that I can plan a shot in detail and walk away with nothing. On the other hand, I can walk by a scenery and totally unplanned capture the view, which then turns into a great image.
Rocky Mountain National Park is home to many rivers, including the famous Colorado River. Technically, what you see in the above landscape artwork is a creek, although I call it a river. Normally creeks are smaller than rivers and generally do not have tributaries, nor do they branch out. However, despite the naturalist’s exact definitions, flowing water in the mountains will commonly make you feel better. Standing by a river in the Rocky Mountains is literally a breath of fresh air.
