Aegean Sunrise | Nea Vrasna, Greece
A striking sunrise in the Aegean Sea, featuring the Strymonian Gulf and Mount Pangaion on a warm summer day. The strong sunlight is filtered by humidity, clouds, and atmosphere and thus creating colorful warm hues above the sea. Beautiful clouds slowly stretch across the sky producing a textured sky and balancing in this panoramic photo. In addition, the clouds create narrow, long shadows, which project high into the heavens and form a star-like bright light.
I have visited this Greek paradise many times and have gotten up early to watch the Aegean sunrise. On this particular visit I got up at dawn two days in a row in order to photograph the morning light. The first day was ok, but not great. However, on the second morning I was blessed with more beautiful light and cloud formations. As the sun slowly lifted and the sea water remained fairly calm, a true fine art photography landscape unfolded in front of me.
Because of the high humidity around the Sea, a person can look directly into the Aegean sunrise without damaging his/her eyes. However, this can be done while the sun is very low on the horizon. It is an amazing experience, which I have had the privilege of having multiple times. While my nature artwork here captures the scene pretty well, it is no match for seeing it real life.
A Aegean sunrise is worth waking up early and losing some sleep. It reveals a beautiful part of the day and a gorgeous body of water, which is part of the larger and better known Mediterranean Sea. The Aegean Sea is located between the Greek peninsula and Asia Minor. To the south it stretches till about the island Crete and is considered an arm of the Mediterranean Sea.
