Capture the twilight beauty of Colorado’s autumn during a new moon evening rich with fall colors, set against a gradient of colors transitioning from deep blue to soft pink and orange as day turns to night. This scene showcases the gentle transition from day to night, as a crescent new moon graces the twilight sky, accompanied by the brilliant planet Venus, under the fading sunset glow over the rugged Colorado wilderness.
The composition features a vast field of golden-brown grass, bathed in the soft dissipating light of the sun, which by now is well below the horizon. The vibrant autumn foliage of aspens punctuates the landscape with rich tones of gold and orange, reflecting the last light of the deepening twilight. In the distance, the rolling hills and dense forests lead the eye toward the majestic Rocky Mountains, whose rugged peaks are silhouetted against the fading light.
The middle ground is composed of rolling hills covered in dense forest. These hills form a darker contrast to the bright colors of the trees and grass, leading the eye towards the background where tall, majestic mountains rise. The silhouettes of the mountains are sharp and distinct, with one particularly prominent peak to the left. The mountains are bathed in soft shadows, and the fading light accentuates their contours.
PERSONAL NOTE
Taking this image was an absolutely surprising and unplanned delight for me. I went out that night with a very specific purpose – to photograph Wilson Peak with the Milky Way. As I was waiting for night to fall I happened to look to my right and my attention was immediately caught by what I saw on the west horizon.
In a beautiful formation the planet Venus, the new moon, the tip of Dolores Peak align in a line that just makes this image amazing. Had I been at a different location this perfect alignment of Earth, Moon, and Venus would not have been visible. I was in the right place at the right time by no credit of mine.
This image was like God’s gift to me, aligning so many factors in one moment, and allowing me to be there with my camera. It was a treasured personal experience of blessing the solitary evening of a mountain landscape.
