This full moon landscape idea was born about a month before taking the image. I was traveling across the eastern Colorado plains when the moon had just risen above the horizon. Going 75 miles an hour I spotted to my side a simple but a beautiful sight. It was just a farm field, sky, and moon. Nothing else. There were not even any clouds. You might say, it was quite opposite from what I often look for when I am in pursuit of fine art nature photography.
Nevertheless, this full moon landscape captured me in just a split of a second. I wanted to stop and shoot but there was no good place to pull over. In addition, a very strong wind was blowing, which would have shaken the camera and caused a blurry image. Sadly I decided to keep driving but on that evening I saw a vision for a new image collection that I could start building.
This simple but powerful landscape with a full moon above the horizon gave me the idea for what I would call the “Simplicity” collection. It would be a series of nature fine art landscapes which are clean, simple, and in a way minimalist. Therefore, I waited for the next moon cycle and went out to shoot the panoramic photograph you see here. Although different from what I saw a month earlier it still captures the general idea that I saw that evening.
This experience of seeing a plain full moon landscape reminded me of the beauty in the simple. Us nature photographers often chase the outdoor charm in the complex and intricate. While those scenes need to be captured and I appreciate them very much, I decided to start paying attention to the simple allure as well. It reminds me of The Little Prince who saw the beauty and the meaning in simple things. What I have captured in this image reminds me of the loveliest and saddest landscape.
