A California sunset warms the skies on a pleasant evening by the ocean beach. La Jolla’s Scripps Pier provides a frame which, combined with the coastal landscape, creates a seemingly unreal looking photograph. The long concrete structure appears almost as a tunnel into the unknown and infinite. The evermoving waves continue to push with their force against the solid pillars. The view reminds of two opposites in life: the immovable and the constantly changing. It reminds me of God’s solid presence and His unchangeable nature. “For I am the Lord, I change not;” ~ Malachi 3:6
This California sunset view was very challenging to photograph for a number of reasons. First, shooting straight into the sun is always challenging because the bright light creates a strong contrast. Second, having a long object like the pier, which starts in the foreground and extends into the background, presents a difficulty in keeping the entire image in sharp focus. Finally, the most difficult task was creating a multi-shot panoramic image with moving waves. Putting all of these conditions together and walking away with a solid image is a monumental task. Nevertheless, my efforts on site and later in post-processing paid off and I am really happy with the final result.
