Maroon Bells Panorama, Colorado
In this Maroon Bells panorama I am emphasizing the magnificent face of the mountain. The area is so spectacular, it is no wonder why this is the most photographed place in Colorado. Observe the symmetry of the valley and the mountains in this fine art landscape. The slopes on both sides are so harmonious, as they gently come down at the center of the valley. The viewer’s eyes cannot help but be directed straight into the gorgeous fourteeners. The scenery is so photogenic that it is a nature haven for the landscape photographer. This mountain is picture perfect!
Although people flock to Maroon Bells during the warmer months I was privileged to enjoy this panorama alone. The reason is that few people venture out here during the winter time. While one can drive up during the summer, the road is closed in the winter. The only ways to get there are on foot, on skis, on snowshoes, or with a snowmobile.
Therefore, I set my mind to attempt a winter panorama of Maroon Bells. My goal was to be on location before sunrise. Therefore, I woke up at 4am and hopped onto my cross-country skis soon after. With a headlight I proceeded to cover the 6 mile distance between me and Maroon Lake. It was a calm and peaceful night with a thick cloud cover. Gliding on my skis through the dark was quite a special experience.
After two hours of skiing I reached Maroon Bells as the entire panorama unfolded in front of me. It was still quite dark, but the first signs of dawn revealed the entire view which was breathtaking. Sadly the clouds remained and they obstructed the sunrise light I had hoped for. However, I stayed at the frozen lake for 3 hours hoping that the clouds would clear and let the sunshine through. My patience was rewarded and in late morning I captured the panoramic photograph you see here.
