Uncompahgre Peak | Slumgullion Pass, Colorado
Uncompahgre Peak is one of the uniquely shaped mountains in Colorado. To me personally, it is a reminiscent shape of something you would see in the Alps. This fourteener dominates the terrain with its massive size. Resembling a giant canine tooth, combined with sheer mass, it commands respect and makes for a great landscape. These qualities are noticeable in the image, despite the fact that the camera is a good distance away from the mountain.
On this particular Colorado morning I watched magic before my eyes with Uncompahgre Peak in the center. One is fortunate to witness such a rare sight and capture it with a camera. The aspen fall colors were in peak condition. The rising sun cast its pink hues and gentle light. A fast moving snow storm became a perfect backdrop by catching the warm tones from the sunlight. This was a divine culmination of color, weather, scenery, and light. Simply put – nature photography conditions at their best.
Landscape photographers dream of these kinds of nature scenes. When captured correctly, they produce stunning fine art prints. However, they are not easy to shoot. One challenge on this particular day was the short-lived sunrise. Another was the fast moving storm. At some point it completely engulfed Uncompahgre Peak and sprinkled it with an early Colorado snow. I had only moments to shoot but fortunately I was ready.
The word Uncompahgre is defined as “a Ute people of southwestern Colorado”. Uncompahgre Peak, Colorado towers at 14,308 feet. It is the sixth highest mountain in the Rocky Mountains of North America, as well as the state of Colorado. This impressive peak is located in the Uncompahgre Wilderness, which is part of the San Juan Mountains.
