A monastery atop a tall cliff, surrounded by other tall cliffs, Meteora, Greece

Varlaam Monastery | Meteora, Greece
Varlaam Monastery (also called All Saints) is illuminated by the sunrise, as the early morning light creates deep contrast in the Meteora rocks. Do not be fooled by the panoramic orientation of the image. This monastery is perched atop a vertical rock tower with walls higher than 1200 feet (365 meters). My goal in this fine art image was to showcase the beautiful monastery from a rare angle and a gorgeous rock backdrop in the distance. On the left far side you can also see the Roussanou Monastery.

Varlaam Monastery is named after the monk who was the very first one to climb the rock and establish the first construction in the middle of the 14th century. Some sources specify the year as 1350. Varlaam built three small churches, a small cell, where he could live, and a water tank. However, after his death the rock became uninhabited for nearly 200 years and the original buildings were almost destroyed.

Although different sources vary on the exact year, they agree that the actual Varlaam Monastery was officially founded in either 1517 or 1518. Two brothers from Ioanina – Theophanes and Nektarios Apsarades, were credited for it. They were also monks and renovated the original church and expanded the construction. It is said that it took them 22 years to hoist all the building materials to the top, and only about 20 days to construct.

Throughout the 16th century Varlaam Monastery was continuously occupied by about 35 monks at a time. In the beginning of the 17th century it began a decline. In the 19th century steps were carved on the side of the rock improving its accessibility. Later the monastery was restored and today is one of the active 6 monasteries remaining in Meteora.

FINE ART PRINTS FOR SALE

Print Mediums

Acrylic - TruLife® LumaChrome Prints - ready to hang

This is the absolute highest luxury, museum quality product in fine art printmaking on the market today. Acrylic prints boast a tremendous range of vivid and bright colors, incredible sharpness and clarity, and an anti-reflective acrylic surface. Put together, these qualities result in an almost 3D looking showpiece, which immediately captivates and impresses the viewer. TruLife® acrylic prints are a fully finished wall art product, ready to be hung on your wall.

Lumachrome acrylic fine art prints reflect light with amazing luminescence due to the Iridium metal particles used in the print inks. Because of this, these museum quality prints appear as if they are lit from behind. In addition, the colors are amazingly vibrant and well saturated, while the dark areas maintain great detail. Furthermore, I use the anti-reflection, scratch resistant, and UV protective TruLife® acrylic as a standard on my limited edition prints.

Metal - ChromaLuxe Prints - ready to hang

Metal prints are a paperless fine art photographic product. The inks are directly infused and sealed onto an aluminum sheet, in order to produce this gallery quality, luxury artwork. ChromaLuxe metal prints result in a stunning, high-gloss fine art image, with bright and saturated colors. Metal prints have incredible image quality, archival properties, and physical durability.

Research has shown that ChromaLuxe metal prints will outlast, by three times, silver-halide photographic paper prints. Besides, metal prints are a remarkable high definition product, delivering high quality at a slightly lower price, compared to acrylic prints.
