A unique capture of Colorado fall colors, which I will never be able to replicate. As a fine art landscape and nature photographer I often plan and envision my images before ever pressing the camera shutter. On the other hand, every now and again I come across a completely unplanned and unexpected scene where I only have moments before it is gone. These are such special moments which are hard to describe to a person who has never experienced them. Any time I am blessed with one of them I feel tremendously grateful to God for allowing me the privilege.
If those encounters happened regularly and lasted for a long time they would not feel as precious. However, because they are always unexpected and last for a few brief moments, they are priceless.
On a late afternoon I was hurriedly driving towards a very specific destination. I know what I wanted to photograph that evening and wanted to be there for sunset. My route passed through a mountain valley, weaving its way among the hills. The sky was predominantly cloudy and the sun was working its way down towards the horizon. All of a sudden I came out of a curve in the road and saw an open view of the hills on the opposite side. Right at that moment a thin horizontal opening had been created in the clouds on the west side. This allowed the sunlight to pass through in an unusual horizontal band, which gave life to all the fall colors across the valley. Even more unusual was the fact that right in the center of it was a grove of aspen trees, which created perfect symmetry. My emotions were high as I got a strong adrenaline rush. Scurrying to get out of the car I managed to capture this stunning scene. Can you imagine why that was a precious moment for me?
