The early morning light has made its way through the treetops of golden aspens, bringing hope that the day is on its way. Fall color leaves burn with brightness as the sunlight sets them on fire. They glow with strong radiance, catching the first rays of the sun. The valley is still submerged in dark shade and sound asleep. Rocks, trees and mountains patiently await their turn to be illuminated by the sun.
Light is a natural symbol of hope. Many people are afraid of the dark, yet we never hear anyone being afraid of the light. We use phrases such as “Light at the end of the tunnel” in order to indicate the glimmer of hope during a tough time. When we have had a rough night, we are encouraged by the first signs of the day. Notice how these aspens gloriously glow and completely change the mood of the scene. Had I photographed this landscape moments earlier it would have conveyed a very different feeling.
This image for me symbolizes the power of light and our association of it with hope and encouragement. I woke up at 4:30am at the head of a trail and hiked for 2 hours in darkness for most of that time. While I wasn’t afraid, the dark shadows of the forest did bring a level of discomfort. Once the first signs of the dawn began, I noticed a subconscious elevation of my spirit and energy level. Not long after that I captured the scene you see in this photograph.
I love how the light in this picture illuminates the closest edge and brings hope that soon the entire valley will be covered with sunshine. Look far into the distance in the upper left. Notice a tiny patch of aspens gently catching light as well. As soon as you spot that, the message becomes clear – the day has begun and light will quickly push darkness out. “Let your light so shine before men” – Matthew 5:16
